The legendary city of Cardia is once again up for grabs, and a new two-player card game promises to turn the struggle for power into a tense duel of wits. Duel for Cardia, from Hans im Glück, blends quick encounters with tactical depth, offering players a battle where every decision matters.
In the game, both players wield identical decks of 16 cards, each numbered 1 through 16. Every card represents one of Cardia’s four factions (the Rebellion, the Academy, the Guild, or the Dynasty) and comes with its own special ability. Each round, players simultaneously reveal one card to face off in what is called an encounter.
The rules are deceptively simple: the card with the higher influence value wins the encounter and claims a signet, while the losing card immediately triggers its ability. Sometimes, losing can be just as powerful as winning — abilities might alter influence values, discard an opponent’s cards, or even change the results of past encounters.
Encounters stack side by side in the direction of play, creating an unfolding battlefield of faction powers and shifting influence. Some abilities are instant, while others remain in effect thanks to ongoing tokens, turning the tide of future plays.
Victory comes when a player secures five signets on their cards, activates a winning ability (such as the mighty Djinn’s instant win), or prevents their opponent from playing any further cards. For added replayability, advanced modes introduce location cards that change the rules of the duel and alternate “Deck II” cards with new abilities for greater challenge.
