Do tournaments really take a YEAR to complete?

Do *all* tournaments take a year? Obviously not. Can some take a year (or more)? Yes.

This one will take up to 10 months. You have a group stage consisting of a 5-round Swiss that feeds 8 players per group into a single-elimination bracket. There are 4 groups, so you'll have 32 in the bracket, which will also take 5 rounds to complete, so possibly another 5 months. But only the finalists go the distance. 106 players out of 138 will be finished after the 5-round group stage.

Yes. Some maybe 2 years. Beware of what you join. Not sure why tourneys with 2p, short, easy, few turns games have 30 days per match. I avoid ........ 30 days for complex multi player games. I fully understand. Also for Swiss. Check number of matches. If 20. Could take awhile.

Some individual games can take a year or more to play -- see Unconditional Surrender, for example. I've played the Main Event scenario which covers much of the Second World War and this takes a long time in turn-based mode with three players.

Yes, but in a tournament an individual Unconditional Surrender game could not last more than 30 days because that's the maximum time a round can last.

There really should be a warning or notice letting people know how long it will take to complete. I did a tournament for another game earlier and 6 games started at the same time with much less time to finish each game. That's why I wasn't expecting 30 days each, one after another.

Hmmmm. Maybe read the tournament details before joining. And use some simple math to figure out that a 30 day per match might take awhile. Sounds like you got in a round robin tourney without even knowing it. Again. Please just read All the tourney details before joining.. but. Don't feel like your the only one to not read tourney details. I have done it myself. Learned that i need to read all the details. Learned lesson in what not to join .

This is why I prefer "multiplayer elimination" tournaments or single elimination. Then you don't have to keep playing after you're eliminated.

As has been discussed *many times*, this aspect of round robins is not documented *anywhere* except in the tournaments forum (link to it if I'm wrong). So even if someone were to "just read All the tourney details before joining," they wouldn't know this.

And I condescended myself if you read my entire comment where I say I have done it myself. And had to learn the time lessons myself. many don't read tourney details or understand them. And loads of players do not understand time. Not condescending. Just a fact.
