How do you get bread without a major improvement?

I'm trying to learn the game and played solo with beginner set-up and no additional action spaces. To do most of the major improvements I know you need bread. But how do you get bread without a major improvement?? I know I've done it before because I've been able to build the major improvements, but I can't figure out how I've done it!

Can you please clarify which major improvements you mean?
A bread resource doesn't exist in Agricola.

Some major improvements allow you to "bake bread" which is the name of an action that turns a grain into some amount of food (the amount varies by the improvement). Maybe you misread the card. The major improvements let you bake bread instead of requiring it. Some minor improvements might require you to be able to bake bread, in which case you need another improvement that can bake bread (they usually have a bread icon on the card).
