Restart turn needs to be moderated!

Post by Weewa »

I am so sick of people constantly using "restart turn" to try out a whole different turn. If you wouldn't/couldn't do it at the table with a real game you shouldn't be doing it on BGA.

There needs to be a limit on restarting during a game. Yes, there are sometimes situations where it is necessary, as you honestly make a mistake, or hit the wrong button, or notice you can't actually do what you had planned due to lack of money etc. But I constantly come up against people that seem to exploit the feature, maybe trying to optimise a turn? You wouldn't do it sitting at a real table with mates (often you couldn't because of the complexity of the and trying to remember all the bits to undo), so you shouldn't be doing it here.

With even the "fast" games being so generous in the timing it seems a lot of people have come up with this "stratergy" and it really takes away from the fun of the game.

I suggest 3 "redo" tokens per game.

Implementing this would make people play painfully slowly, since they would triple check in their head every turn before committing, in order not to waste the "Redo" tokens.

Not sure to follow you, why would that be any different than planning and checking all possible moves in their head ?? As long as the time keep going, i dont see what is the problem with undoing, really

Good Idea. Because if they plan it in their head, as they should be doing, then it’s their own calculations (like you were playing at home) instead of trying out the combos with points automatically added via the BGA platform. People are already painfully slow as it is. The time allowance, especially early game, is far too generous, so I don’t think ‘restart tokens’ would take much longer.

I dont get your reasonning either. You are complaining that people are slow, but why would it make people faster to plan everything in its head ? If anything, it would probably makes players slower because they will want to make sure their computation is correct before commiting to a move.

They shouldn’t be able to make the computations by playing their move then undoing it all and starting again and then undoing it all and starting again. You can’t do that at home when you’re playing their actual board game, can you, because well done remembering everything you’ve done. If the time limit per turn was one minute faster then I’m sure the slow players that take advantage of being able to undo and restart so often would stop doing it and actually make their computations while the other turn(s) is/are happening so that it’s a nice flowing game in the spirit of actually playing a board game at a table in a house or church or cafe or where ever it is they play their real life board games

So I've got a couple of games played here and I've never encountered someone that consistently uses the undo feature to simulate moves, to the point I could call that exploitation. Sure thing, when you do the move you have planned, you come across a better path and you undo, but that happens once or twice every game. I would call that normal. Also, I find it useful as an opponent when somebody undos, because it tells me what they might have planned for later and I can counter it.

I think the game is more about strategy than it is about where the thinking takes place. I have 2 mates that literally do all the undo-ing on the real board almost every time we play. Trust me when I say it it's a lot more annoying in real life because as you say, we have to remember where all things were. But would I grief them over it? Never.

An argument could be made about adding a game option (e.g. You have 3 undos per game), and you could choose to play with that and be paired with people that only have that enabled, but mistakes are often made, and then what is the magic number of undos you choose, 3, 5, 7? Imagine losing a game because you couldn't undo. The very next thing you'd do is disable that option.

Edit: Spelling.
Edit #2: Realising the irony of Editing for spelling in the context of this post about undoing.

WTH you talking about, redoing a move before passing is exactly what you do when playing with friends on real board game. Heck sometimes even you fix up a mistake like wrongly positioning a enclosure or missing a trigger even after you pass.

We do undo on a board, but hardly every because as you say it is painful undoing on a board.

My point is, the game was designed to be played on a board, it is designed that you calculate the moves in your head, that is how it was designed to be played. Having played a lot on a board, this digital version is just not the same as people do exploit being able to restart turns. A simple undo I understand, its the going back to the start of the whole turn, repeatedly, that gets me. Wouldn't be a problem if the fast game time limit was actually fast, but it is painfully slow, espically in early turns when people take almost their whole allocation of time on each of the first few rounds.

The problem is that the time limit in the early game is WAY too long, so you can try out every option and restart. Its the exploiting it over and over to get the best possible outcome. That is not how the game was designed to be played. And yes, having to do it in your head is how the game was designed because that is how normal people play at a table.
