Some notes on reputation effects

Post by jwanders »

This isn't a complaint and I'm going to try my best not to make it sound like one. I got myself into the mess and am willing to take the reprecussions.

I recently started a number of "heavy" just before life interfered at my time to play on BGA plummeted. I started by using a time joker to extend my time, but even that time just disappeared on me. Knowing that I wasn't going to be able to finish everything I'd started, I decided it was best to leave the games I'd yet to take my first turn in now, instead of getting half-way through and not being able to finish.

In each, I posted a message in the game chat apologizing and explaining that real life had caught up. Only, once I got half-way through the ~6 I needed to leave, I learned my reputation had fallen low enough that I couldn't chat anymore, so wasn't even able to apologize to those players. I later learned that due to my reputation drop, I'd been kicked out of a number of tournaments--I guess effectively abandoning additional games that were halfway through, exactly what I'd been trying to avoid.

Another thing I discovered is that my low reputation adds a cap on the number of turn-based games I can play concurrently. I've been looking for a way to do this in my profile settings, just to help avoid the situation I've gotten into. Seems counterintuitive for one of the reputation penalties to be something some players might find desirable.

I get that the reputation system is necessary and by necessity needs to cover a lot of different cases. Certainly not going to say there's anything wrong with what happened in my case, just that some aspects felt counterintuitive. Again, I take full responsibility for not better managing my commitments and will slowly work to build my reputation back up.

The way it's supposed to work is, when your reputation falls below a certain threshold you are removed from a tournament after completing any game in progress. You shouldn't have been removed from an ongoing tournament table that was halfway complete, unless you had exceeded your allotted time and an opponent skipped your turn.

Ahh, that's likely what happened then. Ironically I'm likely going to be back about the rep threshold by the time the next round of the tournaments start 🤷

For non-tournament games you could have offered to collectively abandon the game with an explanation in the chat. Your opponent has no obligation to accept and your practical issues may not have allowed it. And, its worth noting in some games that are two-player with significant progression you could have conceded.
Those might have mad the hit less onerous.

Also note that time jokers have no effect on tournament games (because otherwise that would mess with the tournament schedule). So maybe that's why the tournament games were gone quickly.
