Filter by Complexity/interaction/luck etc.

Post by ArtemisterT »

When looking for a new game, I'd love to be able to search/filter/sort by Interaction. Could be expanded to complexity, strategy, luck, as well, but interaction is the one I'd particularly use.

And what would be looking for exactly? Especially "interaction" seems to mean different things for different people, so whatever the filter yields would only be half-useful at most, and completely misleading at worst. Besides, the interaction/complexity/strategy/luck settings are just something set by the developer as they see fit, sometimes left at their default (3), sometimes set to 0 for no good reason.

For example, chess (you directly block and capture the other player's pieces) and Azul (your moves directly affect what other players can do) have interaction 0. Ludo (I'd say it's exactly the same as chess, if not less because of so much luck involved), 6 nimmt (as far as I remember the only "interaction" is you play cards in the same rows) and Flip 7 (yes, there's the flip 3 and freeze cards, but otherwise pretty much a solitaire game) have interaction 3. The Werewolves of Millers Hollow and Trusis have interaction 5, so it looks that their developers thought interaction had something to do with speaking or trying to influence other players. But then Bang (where table talk is encouraged by the designer) has interaction 3. Among cooperative games, Don't Let It Die has interaction 1, and Now Boarding has interaction 5, and I believe they involve roughly the same amount of discussion and planning.

You can already find a detailed discussion on this kind of filtering and the problems around it here: https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30423

There are also about a dozen suggestion reports for this. You can start looking and voting for them here: https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=46942
