What is the point of the arena?

Post by Rook11 »

What is the point of the arena? What do you get for being in the top? Is your arena history stored somewhere or are winners announced somewhere? Why play the arena over other modes?

Edit: Thanks, all. Your responses are helpful. :D

When it was introduced the 'point' was to give a space for more competitive players. Does it work? Shrug.

It's forced format and forced pairing, meaning everyone is compared under the same rules and players can't cancel the game if they find their opponent's rating uncomfortable. Arena also functions in cycles that a player can win, unlike regular rating where there isn't a scoring period.

You get an achievement (and associated XP), and your name appears in the game's page as the "reigning champion". What's the use of that? None. Just for your own satisfaction and bragging rights.

I guess people play because it's a competitive environment with a goal. It's also a fixed set of game-specific options (expansions, number of players, etc.) for each season, so no arguments about "I'm better than X, because X plays only vanilla and I play the latest-greatest expansion" and the like. And you can't choose your opponents, you have to rely on automatic matchmaking. It may be that in some games is easier to find Arena matches than simple ones, but that I don't know. On the other hand, the fixed settings for each season are the source of constant complaints from players wanting something different.

Some people also play Arena even if they don't care about Arena rankings because they say they can't get games going outside of Arena.

Absolutely. If you finish in a top spot, you get an award for it that goes in your award cabinet. If you finish on top, you will also be the reigning champion throughout the next season, which is displayed on top of the current Arena rankings for that game.

This is a bit off the OP's question, but I would like to know about how the Arena Mode determines your standing (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc). I was in 1st place in the standings and lost a game and 30 pts was subtracted. I went tumbling down to 4th place. That's a bit severe for losing only one game. On my next victory, I gained only 3 pts back! That seems really lopsided.

I tried looking for an explanation into how standings are scored but I haven't had any luck.

Exactly.

My open invites for "Earth" sit for days, so I started playing Arena, and now I get games frequently.

Your Elo rating will change using the standard Elo formula.

But, your arena points will increase or decrease using a k-factor of 40 (This is double the standard Elo factor used on this site) based on the difference between your arena points and your opponent's.

That's where it can be punishing. You may be facing an equally skilled opponent who just happens to have far fewer arena points for whatever reason. When you lost 30 arena points, that means your opponent had approximately 200 fewer arena points. Usually, a difference of 200 would mean an Elo loss of 15, but because Arena uses the doubly high l-factor, it means you lost 30.

When you won your next game, you had the misfortune of playing someone FAR below you in arena points. Approximately 420 points below you, I think, which would mean you would gain approximately 3.2 arena points for a win (Had you lost, you would have lost another 36.8).

Arena uses ELO ratings (with K=40).

Basically, winning against stronger opponents will give you more points than winning against weaker opponents, and losing against weaker opponents will make lose more points than losing to strong opponents. What you just experienced is something I refer to as 'life is hard at the top' - if you are at the top of the rankings, every loss is going to cost you a lot of points, while wins only get you a few.
