Nice! Thanks, Acerbic! And arena is going to draft 8 and weak banlist! Good times!

I do hope we can get this discussion reopened down the line, as I do think there are still a fair bit of cards that need to be trimmed, but this is a very good improvement :3

With the new stats, it’s time to look at the weak banlist again.

As a reminder, the point of the list is to remove cards that are pretty hopeless even in niche strategies. Having complete junk in the draft adds variance, especially in lower draft counts, without making the game more fun. It actually makes interesting combos with unusual cards less likely, by wasting a slot in the draft. But cards that can occasionally lead to brilliancies should not be included. It is for this reason that cards like Growing Farm, Wealthy Man, Cob, Heart of Stone etc are not in it - unusual cards doing brilliant things is part of the joy of the game.

Proposal

Unban: Blackberry Farmer

Blackberry Farmer continues to have terrible PWR, BUT it has reasonable elo/play over a non-trivial amount of games, suggesting it can add value in niche strategies. Plus there is an official movement to get it unbanned, which adds weight to the idea that people think it’s in the wrong place.

Ban: Cooperative Plower, Roughcaster, Small Animal Breeder, Forest Tallyman

These cards have the following features. (a) Extremely low PWR and strong negative elo/play. (b) Played non-trivial amounts of the time. Previously we decided that cards that were being played a reasonable amount shouldn’t be included, but Lumin made a good point; why keep in cards that are pure traps for newer players. (c) No meaningful brilliancy potential (boring even when they come off).

For discussion (recommend ban): Hardworking Man, Large-Scale Farmer, Mummy's Boy, Culinary Artist, Claw Knife, Mill Wheel, Brotherly Love, Dutch Windmill

Taking each in turn:

Hardworking Man: Terrible PWR, Terrible elo/play. But maybe it has the potential to be part of a brilliant game?

Large-Scale Farmer: Similar. Marginally less terrible stats, but less brilliancy potential?

Mummy’s Boy: This one confuses me. It has very bad PWR, but its elo/play is actually good on a reasonable number of plays. I must be missing something because to my eyes it looks unplayable.

Culinary Artist: Bad PWR, Bad elo/play, not convinced it has enough potential for niche strats but could be persuaded.

Claw Knife: This has a painfully awkward requirement (exactly 1 pasture), a weak effect (2f when you take sheep), and it turns out that even when played it has very bad elo/play. This is the kind of minor I think we should be including.

Mill Wheel: Lumin was strongly against banning this before, but the stats for it are dreadful and I take justyellow’s point seriously that we should be trying to add more minors to the weak list. Low PWR, bad elo/play, just an all round bad card. Should we keep terrible cards just because they have a point written on them?

Brotherly Love: terrible elo/play, probably has padded PWR stats as a minor costing only one food but is still very low PWR. Not convinced it’s part of any meaningful fun strats either.

Dutch Windmill: Very low PWR. It has decent elo/play, but stats suggest it’s generally played in the late game as a way to convert excess resources to points: maybe those games were winning anyway? If we want to ban more minors, this is the kind of card we should seriously consider including.

My thoughts:

Blackberry Farmer: I don't have a strong opinion on this, the effect is fine but tricky to use. This one is on the fence for me

Cooperative Plower: Classic noob trap card, almost impossible to make work unless someone else has a grain seeds combo, and even then you need to act after them. Fine to ban.

Roughcaster: The effect is relatively weak and obliges you to build many rooms, one at a time (very inefficient). The only time I could see this remotely playable would be with Cottager and other DL cards. Fine to ban.

Small Animal Breeder: Another noob trap. It's relatively easy to get a few food from this card, but the tempo cost is often wrong. It could have good games with the right combos, but those games must be very rare. Fine to ban.

Forest Tallyman: Having to play an occupation to set up an underwhelming button for oneself that doesn't combo with anything and requires other action spaces to be occupied. Fine to ban.

Hardworking Man: Again, a private button that requires an occupation action to set up, which cannot combo with any other card and is only usable when other players have more rooms than you. This is junk. Fine to ban.

Large-Scale Farmer: The effect is fine, but the action spaces must be unoccupied and then you need to be able to use them many times. This could be great with Young Farmer and Wood Barterer/Stable Tree or something, but the chances this is good would be very rare. Fine to ban.

Brotherly Love: The effect is fine in theory, but in practice you can almost never find a use case for this. The requirement is way too narrow. Fine to ban.

Mummy’s Boy: Same reasoning as Brotherly Love, the requirement is very narrow. Fine to ban.

Culinary Artist: The effect is quite good, but having to play an occupation and have someone taking travelling players enough times to make it pay off would be very rare. I don't have a strong feeling either way on this one.

Claw Knife: Relatively weak effect and narrow requirement. Fine to ban.

Mill Wheel: I disagree with banning cards with points on them, only 1 wood more than many very playable minors. Easily playable in a wood rich game or in the late game when point capped. Do not ban.

Dutch Windmill: Yes, the cost is high, but being able to convert stone into points can be important. And the effect is fine if you have the right game setup. Do not ban.

I agree with all of alex's list except for claw knife. I also want full peasant, godly spouse and carpenters yard banned. This is very vibes based and I have not looked deeply at the stats for these.

Explanations:
I would make a distinction between terrible card that almost never justifies it's place in a game / "I cannot ever imagine playing this" and bad card that can be playable in theory but in practice rarely manages it. The weak banlist stands in quite an awkward place where the bottom ten or so terrible cards are almost indefensible even for "don't ban anything" purists (does anyone want loudmouth or catcher in the game?), but the function of the weak banlist as conceived wants to ban some ways into the cards that are merely quite bad and this doesn't have as much support as banning only the terrible cards - and the existence of the terrible cards makes people want to stick with the weak banlist.

I think there is thus somewhat of a double standard here for minor improvements and occupations among some people posting - we want the minors to be terrible and don't want to ban bad minors, but are fine banning bad occupations. I feel like minor improvements where the modal use case is spending resource to play the card purely for points at a similar rate to the worst way to spend those resources otherwise do not deserve to stay off the banlist. For this reason I want dutch windmill and mill wheel banned.

Other occs on alex's list mostly fall into terrible or bad and don't seem to have issues being banned for me.

Other cards I want banned:
Full peasant seems very similar to large scale farmer to me. Playing an occupation, in order to then pay a food to take two actions you usually take once in one go is incredibly underwhelming. The tempo of taking those specific actions once is often better with full peasant but it's still weak.
Godly spouse says "if the growth queue is wide open you get to take one extra action every time you grow." This happens rarely, and you need to be growing a lot, and if you get this to work your game often doesn't need the help.
Carpenters yard to me seems to fit the issue of being a card where you are somewhat overpaying for a point as the modal use case - it is possible to get the joinery or the well together, or on minor improvements, but highly implausible, especially given the requirement to pay a wood, a reed and a minor improvement first.

On claw knife: I think partial fencing is drastically underrrated by the BGA agricola community and that cards that reward you for this are treated as requiring something very awkward instead of something somewhat reasonable. I think claw knife is probably not extremely worse than barn cats in theory - the issue is that the community is a lot more averse to making one pasture than some stables. (this reasoning is also why I am on team unban blackberry farmer).

Pioneering spirit is a card I am quite fond of. I think that the renovation mode in rounds 3-5 is terrible - there is no circumstance where I would forfeit two improvement actions to accelerate renovation by a little bit. Just wait for the renovation space. On the flip side, with cards like carrot museum, milking stool, champion breeder or cow prince it is very reasonable, if a little inefficient, to use pioneering spirit to get cows or vegetables early in the game. It's not like people are clamoring to ban cattle whisperer or sheep whisperer.

I am also not completely sure furniture carpenter and oven site deserve being on the weak banlist, but don't think we should be trying to move the weak banlist in the direction of being smaller.

Thanks Siv!

On the general point: I agree. My view is the weak banlst should include both (a) cards that are always awful (Catcher, Breeder Buyer etc) and (b) cards that are almost always awful, and even in the niche strategy where they aren't awful, are underwhelming. It is in this second category that I think Mummy's Boy, Large-Scale Farmer etc live. It's also where various minor improvements live, including Mill Wheel and Dutch WIndmill (both are in the bottom 11 minors for PWR), hence me suggesting them.

On the cards you suggested adding to the list:

Full Peasant: Very low PWR card. Slightly positive elo/play on a reasonable number of plays. I'd be fine with banning.
Godly Spouse: Low PWR but not close to as bad as other weak banlist occs, decent elo/play. I'm against banning.
Carpenter's Yard: Low PWR, terrible elo/play, fine with banning.

For those interested, the worst 15 minor improvements in order of PWR, with my comment on where they stand in relation to the weak banlist, are:

Perennial Rye (on weak banlist)
Growing Farm (normally unplayed but very occasionally a viable strategy)
Oven Site (on weak banlist)
Heart of Stone (normally terrible but occasionally a viable strategy)
Cattle Farm (on weak banlist)
Claw Knife (being discussed now)
Sculpture (normally terrible but occasionally a viable strategy)
Dutch Windmill (being discussed now)
Telegram (normally terrible but occasionally a viable strategy)
Lifting Machine (on weak banlist)
Mill Wheel (being discussed now)
Social Benefits (I support ban, cranes disagrees)
Wool Blankets (rare but occasionally a viable strategy)
Dwelling Mound (rare but occasionally a viable strategy)
Elephantgrass Plant (on weak banlist)

Thank you to the last few posters for the detailed reasoning behind their choices.
I wouldn’t miss any of the aforementioned cards except for wool blankets (very viable in any 2 room strategy).
Coming to think of it, except for the minors that give points, I have never played any of those cards. Ever.

I was streaming last night and the conversation turned to the weak banlist, and in particular the minors that are included (relevant bit starts here, NB VOD won't last forever).

The more I think about this, the more I think we should go ahead and include the minors that meet one of the two criteria I set out below:
(a) cards that are always awful
(b) cards that are almost always awful, and even in the niche strategy where they aren't awful, are underwhelming
In discussion with some of the usual suspects who lurk around the top of Arena each season (xaxaQ, Siveure, MightyW), we came up with the following list (cards already banned in italics):

Perennial Rye
Oven Site
Cattle Farm
Lifting Machine
Elephantgrass Plant
Stable Manure

Sculpture
Dutch Windmill
Telegram
Mill Wheel
Social Benefits
Brotherly Love
Silage
Carpenter's Yard
Wholesale Market

For completeness, this is what the list of occs would be if the current suggestions are implemented:

Curator
Catcher
Sequestrator
Paymaster
Minstrel
Breeder Buyer
Furniture Carpenter
Forest Scientist
Huntsman
Resource Analyzer
Twin Researcher
Forest Campaigner
Sugar Baker
Tree Inspector
Loudmouth
Pig Stalker

Cooperative Plower
Roughcaster
Small Animal Breeder
Forest Tallyman
Hardworking Man
Large-Scale Farmer
Full Peasant
Mummy's Boy
Culinary Artist

The full proposed list is 15 minors and 23 occs. For comparison, the strong banlist has 19 minors and 13 occs.

I think for those who enjoy the weak banlist, this would complete the process of removing junk from the game, while keeping many, many unusual cards with brilliancy potential.

Also: for those who might find it useful, I put Lumin's 2025 stats into a spreadsheet and calculated some more metrics on them. It's here, I've given universal viewer rights and feel free to copy it if you want to analyse it too.

Yeeees, ban Telegram, yeeeees!

(I perhaps unreasonably hate that card more than the others - otherwise no complaint, I am very banhappy, let's get all this junk out of the game.)

I like it. Banhammer, see how it works out, change if it isn't it.
