Which mode would BGA Masters practice with?

Post by CameronHamill »

Hi Members,

I can see there's a number of game mode selections with Schotten Totten.

I wonder which mode BGA Masters at this game would practice in the most? And for players that have played extensively offline what is the Schotten Totten aficionados mode of choice?

Classic Mode (how many rounds typically?)
Tactic Mode (number of rounds?)
Expert Mode (number of rounds?)

I realize the number of rounds obviously determines the length of the match. But I mean in a tournament or offline competition+ if there are any).

To me the classic mode is essential Knizia. Dead simple rules, but quite a lot of tricky, sometimes unpleasant choices with enough randomness and volatility to still keep it interesting for many games. I opted against using tactic cards back then and don’t regret that choice one bit. I neither need nor want them, especially not the more volatile ones.
Offline we usually play a simple best of 3 – alternating starting players of course. I don’t really like the round scoring on here, because in theory you could win the majority of rounds, but still lose on points. [extreme case: 4*5:4, 1*0:5 => 20:21]. But that’s a general problem as long as BGA doesn’t implement a best-of-x option for all games. tl;dr: classic, 1 round on here, best of 3 afk

Thanks a lot yzemaze for your post above! I appreciate how you described various aspects of the game. I realize that Schotten Totten and games such as 6 nimmt! have a lot of dedicated players. I will start off with playing Classic 1 round to practice the game and eventually move on to 2 and 3 rounds.

Thank you once again!

P.S I will check out your YouTube channel and BGG profile

I much prefer playing the "Expert" version: with tactics cards, and claim flag at the start of your turn. To me that feels a bit less luck-of-the-draw ... it's nice to be able to respond to someone's threat!
