Struggling to improve with 6 nimmt! & Schotten Totten

Post by CameronHamill »

Hi Members,

I'm just wondering what is a beneficial strategy for myself struggling with 6 nimmt! and Schotten Totten?

I have bought physical decks of both games and I'm considering playing physical mock ups of certain BGA game replays. I mean I intend on watching various 5 player 6 nimmt! match replays and simulating the perspective of each player. I mean physically dealing out the cards and copying the players moves. I'm just trying to reinforce my understanding of the games.

I see that user Wreckage has some good commented 6 nimmt! games. I also have the 6 nimmt! Android App to practice against AI. However I can't really practice Schotten Totten as there's no app.

I wonder what other tips you would use, aside from playing more games, to improve at these games? I wonder what you would specifically look for in game replays to reinforce your own strategies?

I have read strategy suggestions on 6 nimmt! such as being especially careful of being stuck with extreme low, low, high and extreme high cards. But I'm struggling to implement this effectively.

there are a few 6n recs I can make -

(a) don't get stuck with a lot of anything - if you are choosing between two cards, pick the one that is most like some other card in your hand.

(b) play to the next card. minimize the likely points you'll take over this card and the next.

(c) if you have a card that you are pretty sure will eventually eat, play it as soon as you don't have an actually good play, and no sooner.

(d) think about what might go wrong with your play - what's the worst case if you play the card you're thinking of? .. can you do that instead? If so, do it.

(e) play a few games - ideally not in the arena - where you are playing to lose. If you can figure out how to lose, you can do not that.

Thanks a lot for your tips Vynce! I have read through them a number of times. I will memorize them as they provide a very logical way for me to approach and think about the game. I will be utilizing all of your tips! I very much appreciate your reply.

i found this Schotten Totten guide pretty good (but you would probably be better post that in the proper game section)

Unrelated, i would be interested in good players opinions about Baron Oxx

Thanks very much Shobu and jatubio for the links and information! I will read through all of the strategy guides in each of the links!

I appreciate you both taking the time to comment and provide those helpful links.

jatubio if you search for the player Wreckage on their BGA user home page under their 'About me' section they have a handful of 6 nimmt! games mentioned and a few other games. If you click on those links it takes you to the game replays of selected games. Wreckage has gone through and written comments about certain moves they did or did not make and why. Rather than clicking through the replay with the standard button you can click through the games using the comments. That way it 'fast forwards' less important parts of the game.

I find the step-by-step guide to Wreckage's thinking process very helpful.
