Avalance of Colours - Colour Clues

So in a recent game, I gave the following clues to my teammate:

Red - marking 1r in slot one and 4m (showing as red) in slot three (teammate played 1r after this clue)

Yellow - marking 1y in slot four and also now marking slot three as multi instead of red

My teammate then played the multi in slot three after my yellow clue, "because it was the left card", even though I clued YELLOW.

I believe he should have played the yellow card (that is what I would have done in the situation), but I can't find anything to back me up on this. What are your thoughts, and does anyone know if this convention is written anywhere?

It's written in the collective mind of bga gamers. It's logical that a newly marked card would be the clue target, because if it was multi card that had to be the target a few other colors would work. Even assuming 6 cards in hand, one of them yellow, one of them multi marked as red, it would be very rare (and impossible in 4 or 5-cards hand) that the 4 other cards are exactly red, white, green and blue, blocking the possibility to clue multi card for play with a color. There is always a chance that another multi card was drawn in the meantime, blocking all possible color clues, but in a scenario where you are to choose between clueing yellow for unmarked card and another color for red-marked multi, that's not the case we're exploring.

The newly colored card should always be the play. The fact that M cards require two colors to “show themselves” is a natural byproduct. If the M card was the focus of the clue, you’d clue only that card.

The newly coloured card takes precedence over the multi receiving its second (or more) colour. We use this precedence specifically to allow cluing a card that would otherwise be entirely blocked by a multi to the left.

But there are players who haven’t had enough experience with Avalanche to learn that yet. They’ve learned “left” and don’t think about it any further.
