The current system makes it likely a player who reaches a high arena score might just stop playing and park there to win the season. The suggested modification would mean that same player could continue playing without jeopardizing that high score, while also striving for an even better one, while also continuing to incentivize everyone not in first place to keep grinding toward that top spot.

As noted, we won't know for sure what the result would be unless it is tried.

By the way, this suggestion is not new at all, it is 5 years old, comes up again and again, and you can vote for it.

While it would incentivize playing at the very top, it also has a "downside" that many players might just get satisfied with their highscore at some point and stop playing. Once you happen to fall back somewhat below your personal highscore, you might think that's that for the season, and an improvement in ranking seems far away. I think for many players, the thrill of Arena also comes from the immediate effect that each game has on your score and ranking. Certainly the highscore system would make the ranking much more stable which is both good and bad.
The lazy player will stop playing in both cases when they have reached a rating that satisfies them and will maintain that rating until the end of the season, and will do the same with the proposed system.

On the other hand, players who are looking to improve will be able to continue playing without fear of lowering their maximum rating.

But yeah like you said, you never know what will happen until you try.

I think it's not a bad idea

I've won about 50 arena trophies over the years but mostly top 20 or top 10 and rarely higher. Why? Because I'm risk averse and I'd rather park (as people call it) for a guaranteed top 20 badge than play on for top 1,2,3,5 badge but at the risk of getting nothing.

Under this system of course I'd play on which is more fun

Stopping is not laziness, its just risk management or metagaming if you like

If your goal is to maximise your arena finish in a very luck based game like yahtzee your best move when you get to about 10th is just to stop.
