Please Help Me Understand Arena Scoring...

I am super confused by the arena scoring for Catan.

It just does not make sense.

I played a game where I beat two players who both had higher ELO than me. (I was in the mid 100s, they were in the mid/high 200s) I expected my arena score to go up a decent amount. It went up ONE point for arena.Just one dot, point, whatever it is called. (Platinum level). It was as if I was a high ELO player playing against two new players. (That would make sense to me) but that was not the case.

And then just now, I played a game with two players who were both much lower than me in terms of ELO. I won. I got 3 points (or dots or whatever). I gained more beating low level players than I did high-level players.

Then, in another game that I just finished, the other players had ELOs of 270 and 244. My ELO was 175. When I lost (third place) My Area score dropped 5 dots. **5**!! I lost to strong players.

How am I ever supposed to advance if I need to win 8 consecutive games. Something just seems off. This is not my first time playing arena, but it is the first time I have seen the scoring work this way. Perhaps they changed something

I guess I just do not understand what is happening here. The ELO score increase/decrease makes sense, but the Arena score just does not seem to.

You are mixing up different ratings - which is very understandable since the information is not that easily presented for new players.

Lets assume you understand ELO. Arena games are Elo rated but Elo is not relevant for the specific Arena rating, see below.

If you are playing Arena you get EAS points which are very similar to ELO points (everybody starts with 1500 EAS each season not 0 like ELO, though).

These EAS points are hidden for all players except for Elite level.

Then there are the different levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold,... Elite). These levels have no importance at all they are only thought to motivate players to play more games till they finally reach Elite level and can see their EAS score.
In order to level up you need to win games but ELO and EAS has no influence. Only the levels of your opponents count.

Thus, when you won only 1 star on Platinum level your opponents might have been strong in ELO and EAS but the were perhaps in Bronze level because they did not play much Arena recently. You have won a lot of Elo and EAS but only 1 star.

When you lost a game these players were again in a low level, probably Bronze. Thus you lost the maximum of 5 stars.

Note that you can restrict your Arena games with regards to the levels. If you choose +-0, then you will be paired only against Platinum players.

You didn't make it clear whether you read the FAQ. Knowing that would help clarify the context from which you're writing. So let's start there:

How does Arena work?
To access and play Arena Mode for a specific game, a player must first reach an ELO rating of 100 for that game.

At the beginning of each season, players are placed in the lowest Arena league, Bronze, with 1 League Point (LP).

League Points indicate a player's progress within their league. A player is promoted to the next league upon reaching 10 LPs. Once a player reaches a higher league, they cannot be demoted during that season.

League Points are updated based on the game's outcome. Similar to ELO, the number of LPs a player gains or loses is determined by comparing their final position against each opponent's:

Winning against a player from a higher league grants more LPs than winning against a player from a lower league. Conversely, losing to a player from a higher league costs fewer LPs than losing to a player from a lower league.
Finishing in first position always grants at least 1 LP, even if there is a significant league difference with opponents.
Tying with a player does not reward any LPs, regardless of the league difference.
The total LP adjustment for a player is the average of the resulting values from the comparisons with each opponent.

As the two previous posters noted, LP (those little symbols with a shield and crossed swords) and Elo adjustments are calculated completely differently.

What is sadly now missing from the FAQ is what they used to have that explained how the shields (LP) are awarded, but I have it from a previous post:

This is [ed.: used to be] explained in the FAQ linked at the bottom of every page across the site:

When you win a game in Arena mode, you gain Arena points. You gain 3 Arena points when beating an opponent from the same league, 2 points when beating an opponent from league N-1, 1 point for beating an opponent from league N-2, and so on (and the same for higher leagues).

So if you are 3 or more levels above your opponent, you won't earn shields (points). You will earn Elite Arena ELO regardless of your opponent's level, but if you haven't reached elite yet it happens behind the scenes.

There has been a recent change (as of 2025-10-09) that "Victory in Arena games now awards you League Point(s) regard[]less of your opponent's level." So that last part about "if you are 3 or more levels above your opponent, you won't earn shields (points)" is no longer true.

I was under the impression that higher ELO players would still give more Arena points. Clearly that is just not the case.

The fact that it is a separate scoring system and based entirely on Arena points makes perfect sense and clears that up for sure!

Not that it really matters though, but really it seems that ELO should be part of the picture. I am an "ok" player, but no pro. If someone comes in at bronze to start arena, but has an ELO of 400, and I am at elite with an ELO of 120, the odds that the 400 player will beat me are very high, and that I will beat them are very low, but that simply is not taken into consideration which seems unfortunate.

But regardless, your comments definitely clarified a lot for me and I appreciate that!

The point is that Arena seasons are supposed to start "from scratch" (or almost, you can start at some higher league). Elo scores are based on previous games, with possibly different settings (expansions, number of players, etc.), not necessarily a good predictor for Arena results.
