Don’t waste re-rolls

Post by JayjayBerger »

I often find that some players waste the power that is a re-roll. By playing it too early in the game, like in the first rounds when their dice are inconvenient but it’s not a mortal danger. And/or by playing it at the end of a round, when you reroll only 1 or 2 dice. I find it best:
a) to keep the reroll as a last chance to avoid certain death, often in the last round(s) of the fame. b) to reroll at the beginning of a round, when rolling more dice gives you more chance to get what you need. For example, it is the last round and you absolutely need a 5 or a 6 to open the last flap as a copilot but all your dice are 1s and 2s. Keep one low die for the engine and reroll the other three, you’re more likely to get a 5 or 6 with three dice than with one…
Also, when you have a special ability (for example both players can exchange dice), keep that in mind when rerolling. In my previous example, the pilot will also reroll several dice if he doesn’t already have a 5 or 6 that he can give to his copilot.
But, please, the key message is don’t use up reroll unless you absolutely need to, it might save the game in the last round(s)!

Here is my tips for that:
- if you roll badly, think of what you could do. Playing immediately on axis, planning one coffee, and playing in another usefull space can often be enough good, even with three identicals dices. If you are going for 2 coffees, then instead use the reroll
- if you got mastery ability, that's not true anymore, don't hesitate to reroll if your dices are bad
- you could plan the reroll before the round. Some rounds could require 1/1/2 rolls in radio. If you tell in chat that's you think it's likely a reroll is good for the next turn, you can both play around it. In some cases, you would not need it. Same if you need like 12 on engines to have a big upside. If you have only 4 or less, using a reroll if that 12 is amazing is pretty good, especially if that make you in a great spot for what's remaining
- keeping the reroll for the last round, where if both players roll 1+1 you can do 2 in engine is good too since that make you gain some extra dices, so extra coffees
- in some harsh missions, the first turn can be really hard, you usually want a 1. First play one of your dice, and let the other player do what he wants. That other player could use the reroll if they got no 1 too and if there is another upside, like wanting low in engines too.

Good strategy tips. I just want to drop a reminder that discussing the *dice* is always against the rules, even during the strategy phase. In your example:

"If we don't get 1s and 2s, we should reroll" - AGAINST THE RULES
"If we don't get low numbers, we should reroll" - AGAINST THE RULES
"Clearing planes is critical. Reroll if necessary." - BORDERLINE (imo)
"Let's do whatever we can to clear the planes in front of us." - SAFE

Oh I didn't know that, that's weird, because the randomness of the rolls will make any strict protocal worst.

In many games where this is not gamebreaking any talking is allowed ('take time' is an excellent example: you can said whatever you want, but the randomness of the cards will complicate things).

Thanks for the reminder though :D
