BGA ettiquette and chat

Post by GetBannonAff »

What is the view on players saying GG after a game?

I think it’s only acceptable if you have LOST, if a player wins I think it is grandstanding.

I don’t do it and I don’t like others doing it, but perhaps I am in the minority.

Your feelings on it are your own and you are fully entitled to them. But it is acceptable within the rules of the site regardless of how you feel about it.

Yes, that’s fine, I’m not claiming any rules have been broken.

I just wondered if other players think it is bad ettiquette or not.

There are many different opinions - if you search, you can probably find some threads on them. I would say it boils down to, if someone says it to you, take it as written and don't apply any hidden agendas or tone to it. They're probably not meaning any harm. On the flip side, you are free to use it how you think is fair - if you think you should only say it when you lose, then go that way. But don't assume that others going a different way (from saying it when they win all the way to not saying it at all) means they are being rude, sore losers, poor etiquette, etc. Short of someone directly insulting you, or harassing you (eg. play faster, etc.), most people are probably not intending to be offensive to other players.

I personally only say good game when I think it was a good game, typically a hard-fought/close/well-played game. I feel like saying it on every game devalues it. But that is only my opinion and I accept that others see it differently. Sometimes if others say it first I will respond, but as I mostly play turn-based, I only do that if it's within about 1 hour of game end, as I personally find getting a response about a game that ended hours ago is quite annoying. But again, that's just my opinion. I may feel annoyed, but I don't say anything to another player who happens to do that.

I have stopped saying it after a win because of the potential for it to be taken the wrong way. I'll wait for my opponent to say something. If I lose, I write "gg" and/or point out a key move the opponent made to win the game, which can lead to some valuable strategy discussions.

Gg at the end of the game is just a friendly sign off, whatever the result

It does infuriate me when people say gg several turns before a game is over, but at a point where they think they are going to win (but not certain to do so)

How appropriate that the day after Halloween this topic rose from the grave yet again.

There is no ettiquette consensus - what one person might consider polite/good ettiquette, another will consider to be insulting/bad ettiquette. Whatever you do (including being silent), some players will be fine with it and others will be unhappy. If someone chooses to take offence, there's not much you can do about it.

Neutral. Different players seem to interperet this differently. I'll sometimes say "bad game" too.
