Yaxha: may the best Maya win

Post by DrClick »

Did you know that the most famous Mayan sites were in places such as Chichén Itzá, in Mexico, Tikal, in Guatemala or Copán in Honduras? You can still find magnificent pyramids there and, now, you can build your own on BGA.

In Yaxha, named after a Guatemalan archeological site, you have to build the most beautiful Mayan pyramid. As you build your pyramid, you can imagine interior chambers with treasures, murals or whatever you think will fit your extraordinary construction; however, let’s be honest for a minute, it is all in your head. Here is how the game really goes…

Each round, you will take three blocks from the supply market and use them to construct your own pyramid. The trick is to arrange them so the blocks of the same color are touching. It will take 10 rounds to complete your construction, and you will score points based on how many of the same color are connected. Why are colors important? Because the painted surface of the pyramids showcased Mayan’s history and mythology.

Yaxha's gameplay offers a tactical challenge without feeling overwhelming. It lets you dive into the history of a fascinating civilization, while competing to dominate the ancient jungle.

Yaxha is a strategy-driven game that immerses players in the rich world of Mayan culture. Make the first step to your pyramid or embrace your inner power and lay down your bricks below:

We would like to thank Baptiste Vaiana, the game designer, and Helvetiq for sharing their Mayan-inspired creation with us. No feathered god was summoned during the building of the BGA version, but it took all of fenadoruk’s talent to build it for us, so thank you.

This is your Wednesday release,
Aim for the top... of the pyramid, until then, as always, take care and play fair!

Any chance you can stop releasing games without a rules summary? Some of us can't open random pdf files. If the game is through beta surely someone can add the rules in...

Another white European's game about Mesoamerica? Yeah that's what BGA subscribers are asking for: endless cultural appropriation.

Could y'all add a game by a designer from another culture that absolutely mangles European Christian culture, history, and mythology before you add another one of these?

Correct pronunciation in what context?

It would have been something like /jaʃhaʔ/ in Classical Maya, but Maya languages are not my area of expertise.

Bonjour, je n'ai aucune idée d'où faire mes commentaires sur la version de Yaxha.
NO idea where to publish my comment on this game.

Take a breath. Most modern board games are made in Europe / America that we have availableto us. Name me one south american board game manufacturer/creator? What these games are trying to achieve is expose people to different cultures and places. Most of the game builders haven't left their home countries, they are just trying to make a fun game for people to play. Nothing more, nothing less. This place has nothing to do with culture wars so please don't bring that here. These games tend to spark curiosity in it's players and most players will look up more information. More people knowing about Mayan culture and history is a good thing, right?
