What is the optimal strategy with this hand?

Post by FrankJones »

I had some difficult finding synergy here.

I ended up mostly just playing somewhat random cards without much of a plan. I did not fare well at all.

Tough hand. On the start, I picked mining guild, donation, and IO research outpost. IO gives and extra card and mineral production for engine, biofuels I feels weaker to me.

For cards I picked decomposers, inventors guild, power plant, building industries and methan. Cartel I usually dont keep if I dont have any earth tags.

MG / Biofuels+IO /
Deco/Worms/PowerPlant/PSC/Guild/BI

Play guild + BI assuming you draw nothing better to do.

Hmm.

Two different analyses. Both of which make more sense than what I did.

Cartel was a bad pick. I ended up selling it. That's my brain stupidly not adjusting to preludes with no colonies when I typically play that way. Lame excuse, I know.

Io Research compared to Donation: What is the valuation? I'm not disagreeing; I'm just curious how I should value each component of that prelude (one I usually avoid, but in this case none of my preludes were all that good, so I had to pick the least bad).

Titanium Production: 10 MC? (Using Titanium Mine as a guide, though I don't get the building tag that Titanium Mine would provide)
Random card: 4 MC? 5? With a terrible hand, I suppose we can value a random card higher than usual?
Science tag: 3 MC? maybe 4? I am not holding any cards that require science tags, btu that could change.
Jovian tag: Unsure ?????? I'm mining guild against Ecoline. Am I likely to do anything with a Jovian tag? I have no idea how to value the Jovian tag on this prelude (Hence my question marks.)

Because I had PSC and my opponent only kept one card, I didn't mind playing power plant right away even though I didn't need the energy yet. Delayed Heat, right? And I figured I would be playing it at some point anyway. I figured the upside was worth the unlikely occurrence of my opponent stumbling into Energy tapping.

With the titanium Production and one Jovian tag, and with Ecoline likely raising Oxygen early, isn't Methane From Titan a solid pick? Especially with Biofuels?

As played, my opponent randomly drew asteroid as his first card and zapped my plants. By the time I had 5 plants, the draft has Virus and Giant ice - I was not passing Giant ice. I think protected Habitats was in that draft too - I didn't buy it, because I expected to get virused immediately, which surprisingly did not happen.

I ended up never converting a single greenery.

Maybe I should have kept Urbanized Area.

I really never found a plan at any point during the game, but I can see there ways I could have made better choices, which might have put me in a position to contend. I ended up losing by 16 and was never in a position to contend for the win.

That starting hand made me want to return to my abstract strategy games and/or thematic games that aren't so reliant on random card draws.

But, my opponent only kept one card, so it's not as though I was up against a monster hand either.

Hello there,

My fifty cents :
That's a really tough hand to start with.

You don't really have something to build a starting engine...

I think I'd have picked Mining guild as it is more powerful than UNMI in 1vs1.
Then you want to have a possibility to land tiles on the map fast, yet you have no appropriate cards.

I think I'd go for Biofuels & Biosphere support + Methan from Titan.

Cheap energy always come in handy for future drafts yet this start is really tough so in doubt I'd put it away.

You must have 2 oxy for Methan so I'd land a forest right away on a Pavonis Mons to get titanium and a plant and the Steel prod bonus. This way you have 3 plants and 3 plant prod.

On gen 2, you can land a forest on Arsia mons at which time you have 8 plants and can put another greenery on Noctis Labyrinthus.

On Gen 3, you're bound to wait, grab some builder cards and can play Methan on Gen 4.

At which point you have 5 plants prod, some heat, 2 steel prod and a bit of TR...

Really not ideal, but that would be just the best you can hope.

If you can get a few builder cards - energy, heat, cities - that would be most welcome.
And if you get your plants zapped... you're in for a bad game :-)

Good luck with your games

I would've taken bio support instead of io to go with biefuels+Worms early plant prod plan

The problem I see is that you are pushing heat for him instead of fighting the O2-track. I guess you are too poor for that, but in general SP Greenery on minerals is a really good option for you. Increase steel production and take O2-Bumps from him.

Thanks all; yes, I agree with the advice given. I made some poor choices and blundered ahead with nothing resembling a plan.

Many games rely on luck, including T Mars. Mining Guild in particular, with the low starting cash and corporation ability, is very "luck" dependent on drawing tiles to place to trigger the corporation ability. Sometimes it lines up (I had one such game just now, https://boardgamearena.com/17/terraform ... =760168560 ). Other times, like your posted game Frank, it doesn't. I don't think it means you didn't have a plan...
