Smuggler's reward "move 2"

Post by un_amiral »

I don't understand the reward for smugglers in the 1st row/2nd column or the 4th row/5th column, which says ‘Move 2’. I assumed that the reward would allow me to move two spaces. However, BGA did not give me the opportunity to do so. Does it mean something else? When else can I make these moves? The rulebook does not say anything about this.

Did you do something else immediately after gaining that reward? Rewards must be taken immediately. You can't, for instance, go recruit more crew or gain additional cargo before completing your reward. That's straight out of the rules, even though many players really want to deliver, fill their hold with new cargo, and THEN gain their reward to move. (Which is another way of saying many players want to cheat.)

At that time, it would be more intuitive for the UI to only allow "move 2" or "skip" at that point.

A similar thing happens when putting down strongholds as the bluefin. It's an end of turn only action, but the UI gives you the all the options together with all of the in-turn options at the same time. Some more intuitive UI design would be welcome.

On a side-note this particular move-2 ruling would seem to be an oversight of the game designers. I can guess that almost everyone at home is playing it with 'gaining cargo at any time' in mind before moving 2.

I know it is triggered immediately and I think I wanted to do so. So you don’t have had this issue?

Absolutely not. The intent is that you're limited to how much cargo you can carry. Moving is a power effect. You cannot sell cargo, smuggle new cargo, and then move as part of the reward without it becoming overpowered. It's absolutely intentional and we've received several bug reports when the rules weren't followed precisely.

Mr. Rix, we've certainly seen you repeated complaints about the UI prompting in the official bugs and suggestions. In many cases, adding UI reminders and promptings isn't as simple as it sounds. Adding them in the easy cases would only create discrepancy and confusion as to why the UI sometimes prompts but other times does not.

Fortunately, I've added a robust and extensive undo system that represents many, many hours of work. Additionally, the interface is fully compliant with the choices from the rulebook. If you were playing in person, you'd have a similar freedom to perform any of the available actions. While this might not represent your ideal for the experience, mirroring the physical game experience in this way is exactly what we were aiming for.

Not at all. Look at your game's replay when your game is over. If you don't see the option there, then come post the table number and move number and we'll take a look.

BTW, thanks for posting the question in the forum first before filing a bug report. Not only does this give other players a chance to help each other out and learn from each other, but it frees up developer time. Around 90% of bug reports are not actually bugs, but just rules misunderstandings.

By game designers I was talking about Leder games.

It kinda feels like you don't want to hear about user experiences with your game, or either making practical suggestions.
In general, take it or leave it - it's up to you, you don't have to take it as a personal slur.

So was I. If you ignore that rule, the reward becomes overpowered. Leder Games knows this and included it for that reason.

I can see where you're coming from in thinking that I don't want suggestions. Just because I have a reason for not implementing this suggestion (mainly cost vs benefit), doesn't mean I don't take other suggestions. We've implemented ten user suggestions through the system and countless suggestions from testers and publishers.

Don't worry -- I haven't taken anything you've said as a personal slur. Intended in that same vein of respect, I hope you understand that just because we don't take your suggestion doesn't mean that we don't take suggestions. It's not a personal attack. Rather, it's evaluating each suggestion on a case-by-case basis.
