Rank 1 Fighter Tierlist

Post by Andrewsmile »

I'm the current rank 1 Tag Team player on BGA and I thought I'd do a tierlist of the 12 heroes after playing a few hundred games. This is purely subjective, I'd love to hear if you think I got something super wrong below. I'll rank them first and then do a brief explanation of my rank on each in order of how strong I think they are.

S: Mordred
A: Golem, Maman Brijit
B: Milady, Joan, Wild Bunch
C: Shango, Bodvar
D: Ching Shih, Fey Folk
F: Mephisto, Wong Fei-Hung

If you are playing optimally, Mordred should be a first pick in 98% of games. He has a favorable matchup into every hero except milady, and every other hero is severely punished by either riposte (card that blocks with a counterattack) or execution (direct damage KO if hero is 4 health or less). He has high survivability with 5 cards in his deck that block, and a high health pool that lets him survive while he builds up power. My one word of advice is be extremely cautious adding hidden dagger against fighters with attacks (which is almost all of them) since it is very easily countered.

Golem has the worst cards on average in the game, but reanimation (x2 the next card) is so strong it catapults him to A tier since it enables so many strong combos. His other cards being bad also turns out not to be a huge problem, since his high health pool and slowly building attack power (especially if you pick up heals to pick up the hp track bonuses multiple times) more than make up for it. Most games golem is in, your opponents wincon has to be "kill golem" since it will be so hard to kill the hero he protects. Use this to your advantage by taking a hero that can snowball or heal him.

Maman Brijit is like if the Fey Folk were a good hero. She offers disruption without sacrificing survivability or attack power, and often becomes unkillable in the late game when playing against heroes who build up attack power past 5. She is a great counterpick into heroes that dont want you attacking them, such as fey folk and wild bunch and she can tick them down early game and force your opponent on the back foot.

Milady is barely edged out of A tier because of her unpredictability. Her poison schemes are incredibly powerful and can win games by themselves, but if they come out at the wrong time she struggles to do damage. Additionally, her scheme that deals one damage to everyone has a non-negligible chance to trigger at the bottom of her health bar, killing her instantly. Despite this, she is the only hero that mordred can consistently struggle with. Riposte can trigger from her schemes, but its inconsistent and his hidden daggers can easily be countered with her own attacks. since his health pool is high, poison scheme can bring him way down early and within range of an early KO. Getting an early heal card that plants a scheme lets you build up a large reserve and then start triggering multiple per round in the late game.

Joan would be in S tier if Mordred didnt exist- he scales faster than her and since all her damage comes from attacking his ripostes end her extremely quickly in the late game. Mordred aside, her double heal is the best heal in the game and she is the only hero that can both support her teammate and deal damage at an above average level. she is a good pairing with any other hero.

Wild bunch- if you can find the card that gives the sheriff holder 2 power early, wild bunch scales faster than any hero in the game. If your opponent first picks them, it is imperative you pick a hero that can attack consistently to put them on the back foot since they win easily against most heroes when they dont have to waste time drafting heals. Without this card, they struggle to scale quickly and will be slowly chipped away. Despite this, they are a good teammate option when playing against high power heroes and can do sneaky chip damage that is hard to play around. No one is better at finishing off a low health opponent.

Shango- Golems reanimate makes aflame an extreme problem for your opponent, but otherwise you usually won't win with it. What it does do is force your opponent to diversify their deck, giving you an opening to attack a hero who would otherwise be elusive like the fey folk or wild bunch. Keeping the aflame at a fixed spot in your deck while putting threats on the other end forces your opponent to choose whether to address the growing aflame stack or deal with other problems which makes them more likely to misplay

Bodvar just dies too fast most of the time, but he is carried into B tier by golem who both protects him while he scales and doubles his rage gain with reanimate. He is hard countered by maman brijit who can never die to a sufficiently large bear, can chip him down early before he even gets there, and can even redirect a huge attack onto his teammate. I would only play him with golem or joan- otherwise he gets bursted down too easily, even in bear form.

Ching Shih is bad because her mechanic is inherently flawed- gaining ships means you arent pressuring your opponent, and if you are pressuring your opponent you are wide open to counterattacks from heroes that scale faster than you. Her good cards are only good in specific ship ranges, which can be fleeting. Her 20 ship payoff is too obvious and counterable to be a large concern, and she has too many cards in her deck that dont do anything (gaining 2 ships should never be played ever, you neither deal nor prevent damage which can be so easily exploited). The only reason she isnt bottom tier is her starter card is an attack, so she can apply early pressure which is very good against certain fighters.

I think fey folk are the biggest trap in the game. They are so tempting with their cancels and flashy flip cards, but any competent opponent will burst them down fast. Consider that their starter card is worse than useless (it literally does nothing but kill them) and their block cards only work once and then you will find yourself with a card that doesnt prevent damage lined up against an attack. They are weak to almost every hero, because almost every hero can stack attacks in the area near their starter card and when they do you are powerless to stop them.

Mephisto is really bad for many reasons, but mainly because he cant save himself or his teammate from anything. Drag me to hell has to come at the perfect time, and in over 200 games I have only seen it work once. His only good card does 4 damage to the starter card, but as the decks thin it becomes harder to put that in the right spot. He scales too slow with serpents to outpace other power heroes, and the flip icon on his health track can completely screw up your rotations and leave you powerless to stop the beatdown coming your way.

Do not play wong if you want to win the game consistently. his starter card is half an attack at best (worse than useless against low attack heroes with good block cards), he cant heal himself despite his low health, and his dream of transferring power to his teammate and then restoring it with a well timed block fails to materialize in most games, and can be easily countered. his cards that delete opponents cards only work after the other card takes effect, so for every game you get a lucky read on an opponent and take out their important starter card there are 5 games where your opponent just hits you with a huge attack for free and keeps scaling up while you added a card to your deck that didnt do anything. Best best case scenario, you take out mordreds starter card on turn 2 (the odds of this happening are the odds of drawing it times the 50% chance you place it correctly, a very unreliable figure) and then you have a 2 attack mordred that just stacks blocks while his teammate slows chips away at you, and youre never able to do more than 2 damage to him with your starter card.

Interesting and well thought out on each character. I won't go as in depth but I just got to 1 right after you using primarily Maman Brijit, Fey Folk and the Wild Bunch. The times I lost was usually against Milady. Milady is hard to kill and can be immortal if u play a healer right after her. In your analysis I think the Fey Folk are a lot harder to kill than u think and their immediate 1 power boost and another 1 after their first death to their partner is great. I like the Fey Folk and Maman against Mordred. Who do u use primarily as the partner for him? My bottom 2 would be Shango and Bodvar. Next would be Ching Shih and Wong-FEI. But I have used Ching Shih as a second pick when opponent picks Golem first. Because then u need 2 attackers immediately in my opinion.

I like to play Mephy, Ching and Wong, and I agree with your analysis about them. I think they're accurate and correct. Those heroes all have some critical drawbacks so that they can't acquire the victory easily. ( But I really like their mechanics so I will keep on playing them :D )
By the way, I want to talk about how I play Mephy. For me, Mephy's game style is to control his coin by twin snake and health track effect (move down by damage and move up by heal). By these tricks, he can cheat his opponents, increase his power quickly then attack multiple times in a round. But it requires a bit of luck and lots of guess, it's instable.

I saw that, congrats on rank 1! I'm surprised you rank fey folk so highly. I'll have to go watch some of your replays since my immediate reaction is that your opponents are not as aggressive as I would be, but that's unfairly biased of me. I suspect you like them against mordred because of the cancels, which can be nice, but they seem weak to me against him otherwise due to hidden daggers mashing their starter card and execution getting a free kill on 2/3 of the heroes. Maybe if you paired them with golem I could see that being a good combo, but I would just stop attacking for a while and scale mordred until I could burst golem down. I think the fey single block cards are amazing against opponents who throw in attacks without thinking, but against heavy aggression I just dont think they stand a chance often enough

My favorite partners in order are milady, joan, maman, wild bunch (honestly just using my tierlist above gets you really close). If my opponent is golem/wild bunch/bolvar/fey folk I will always try to take an attacker starter card to pair with him. If my opponent takes a less aggressive hero first and I know im passing less aggressive heroes I don't mind fey folk with him, but thats rare.

I play the game for fun more than maximising my winning chances, so I don't really have a tier list, but I agree with the general spirit of your list. Personally I'm happy to try out any combination of characters. Picking the same characters every time is a recipe for boredom. I will say that I fear facing Wild Bunch the most. Their ability to directly attack the opponent's partner really throws me for a loop, it's a great way to coordinate attacks against one opponent. Also extremely hard to kill - in fact I can't recall a single game where the Wild Bunch was KO'd.

My opponents pick Mordred 90% of the time. I didn't really understand why. I assumed it was just because they are an easy character to play with high potential, but your post sheds some light on the reasoning. Personally I'm glad to see Mordred on the opposing team. The way I see it is that he builds up so slowly that he's not dangerous at all unless he's partnered with someone who can give him power like Golem or Wong Fei-Hung. Not a good character to attack so I generally focus on their partner I've got a lot of wins against Mordred, but also some crushing defeats. A well-placed Riposte is devastating.

There must be something I'm missing about Maman Brijit because I don't understand these comments.

That explains why I can't coordinate Mephisto's serpent consistently. No matter how hard I plan they always end up on the wrong side, and I notice there's a random flip, but never knew where it was coming from until now.

Speaking of which, the first time I picked Mephisto I pulled off a successful Drag Me To Hell. My opponent was targeting him hard, and I saw the inevitable final attack coming, fortunately I drew that card and put it in exactly the right place. Even though that worked out well I've only picked Mephisto a handful of times since.

I just located the Fighters Guide and learnt about Maman Brijit's health bar trick. That explains a lot.

Here is a game where you can really see this principle in action. Opponent builds up rage very quickly and enters bear form early with full health and a high power golem, but cant finish because it becomes quite literally impossible for them to kill maman and I win by chipping them down with huge attacks.

Another reason Wong is bottom tier is that he can possibly make Fey literally immortal if he accidentally removes their starter card ahaha. Nothing but bad interactions from him.

Nice tierlist! I am happy to see it mostly aligns with my impressions after ~90 or so games.

Mordred is so strong that the entire meta warps around him, and I wish that arena mode would remove him from the pool, seeing and playing him in so many games is just so stale.

The only surprise for me here is Golem, I have never been impressed by him; if you can consistently land 1 attack per rotation on Golem's partner, it feels like Golem basically just kills himself with his starter card. That being said, my opponent's (and I) haven't really done anything in impressive with reanimation, perhaps I should give him another shot.

The hero I am most confounded by is Wild Bunch; I always seem to struggle against them but when I play them myself they always die.

I just love this game because all of the good players I met had different favourite.
I'm top 6 currently but I've been top 1.
Here is my tier list.

S (I Always first pick) : Joanne : Joanne do everything and do it well (heal, buff, attack and block), you always want her as she has no known counters. Try to ban Mordred as he scale faster or mama brigitt as she can steal the heal.

A (first pick if no Joanne) : Mama Brigit : almost as good as Joanne, she has an attack as first card, witch is a great advantage against Golem (to hit his partner), The wild bunch and Faery people. She is specialised into countering everything, especially Bodvar, Mordred and all high attack characters.

B (Also very stable, good first picks) :
Milady : My favourite B tier. She is a bit weak against passive characters that scale (like Joanne), but she is statistically a good character. Try to stack a lot and take the hits. She is very good as she has a lot of life points, a usefull stop in her lifetrack and she does a lot just by being attacked.

Mordred : A lot of health point. I Don't pick him a lot, because I find him a bit too slow, even if he can start to be a problem mid game if opponent doesn't play around him but overall he is good.

Méphisto : I love playing Méphisto, his weakness is that he ignores his friend and that he needs a lot of cards to be effective (so he is sensitive to attacks and shingh shih/Brigitte in early game). But he scales insanely fast and he is inpredictable with blocks as he can flip coin easily.

C (Good, but not in first pick because they have a lot of counters) :
Bodvar : Very defensive character. Is sensitive to early pressure and mama but he scales fine, against character that are a bit slow he is very good.
Shingh Shih : Best aggro character in the whole game, start with an attack, has a lot of attacks. You want to play her as soon as the opponent take the wild bunch, Golem or the faery people.
Golem : Very weak to early agression on his Partner. Just for his lifebar and his numerous attacks he is a good fighter. Pair him either with a healer (Joanne or the wild bunch) either with an autonomous character as Méphisto or Mama.

D (Situationals pick, take only in second if they pair well with your first pick or if they counter opponent)
The Wild Bunch : Very good as attacking a fighter that doesn't play a lot of cards. Is countered with characters with a need for big attacks (Bodvar and mephisto) as he buff them. 3 cards out of 9 can attack the character without a card, so it's pretty good at focusing one character. Very sensitive to repetitive small attacks (shingh, mama)

Shango : A lot of hate against this one, but to me he is pretty ok. Just put afflame last, and never move it. Your opponent will have to avoid it every 3-4 turns. And his attacks are pretty strong as they hit everyone (you can help focus the wild bunch or remove golem tokens. Sensitive to early agression, strong against character that need a lot of cards to be effective (Joanne and Méphisto)

Wong Fei Hung : Very strong against character that build a lot of power (Mordred and Bodvar), and characters that need one card to be effective. He is overall weak, Don't play him support with transfert cubes but he is a good counter pick.

E (Bad picks, I never take them) :
Faery People : out of 9 cards, 7 does almost Nothing if the faery people is not attacked, and the other two are cancell cards. I tried to make them works, but to me they are unplayable.
