Arena points

Post by Kaladry »

Can anyone explain how the points for moving up Arena rank works?

I'm currently on Gold level for a game. I'll win a game (to someone in the same ELO level but 50ish points behind me) I''ll earn a single point toward progressing my Gold level but when I lost to that same exact player I lost 5 points of my Gold level.

+/-3 "shield" when the opponent is in the same league ("metal"). +4 or +2 when one league apart and +5 or +1 when 2 leagues apart. Depending if you are expected to win or not.

More or less :p

Elo is not taken into account for arena purposes.

They're a Bronze, you're a Gold. The Arena rating changes will be scored based on your Arena ratings, and your regular rating changes will be based on your regular rating. They won't cross check each other. That way, if you're only properly rated in one of them, the other one can go through the changes to get to the proper rating without them messing with each other.

-5 doesn't sound like "without them messing with each other"

Arena points use the same formula as your ELO score does, but with a higher weighting factor (you’ll get more for a win and lose more for a loss). It is, however, completely independent of ELO. You played somebody who was way below you in Arena score. So, like ELO (but independent of it) when you win you don’t get much but when you lose, you lose a lot.

The line about “without them messing with each other” was referring to the part about ELO not affecting Arena points. ELO “doesn’t mess with” Arena points.

Oh well. Doesn't matter anymore I edited my Arena settings so I won't be playing anyone far from my rank for that game. I've done that for all the other games I play ranked but this was a new one and I forgot I had to manually set that for every game.

It is. The -5 was because of you being a gold to their bronze, you were significantly higher rated than them in Arena. As opposed to regular rating where you two were closer and scored as such. If they were tied together, if anyone was properly rated in one but underrated in the other, the underrated value would have a terrible time climbing to the proper value. By keeping the ratings separate, their overperformance for their low value will keep pushing that rating up while keeping the regular rating the same until it's at its proper value in both areas.
