Neg hint really that important?

Post by CloudTemplR »

in a game with mc, black, flam

I was the 1st player
two other players each had b1, y1 not at chop
nothing to save

1st round
i hint 2nd player blue
2nd player plays
3rd player discards, then draws another y1

2nd round
at full hint and no save, I skip hinted two y1s instead of neg
both players surrendered, and bombed when I refused

one player was a French whose account was already banned
another was an american, but both expert elo

what's wrong with these stubborn players?
1. Even at full hint, is neg really better?
2. Even so, such great players to bomb the game didou13 and Osnowe

Annyohaseyo,

In this specific situation I'd recommend one of two things:
1) do give an empty clue (neg hint); yes, it might seem wasteful at first when learning conventions, but the next player might be able to use this opportunity to *bluff* slot 1 (leftmost) 1y card and potentially save a very useful card like 2g in your hand close to chop in the process
2) clue 1y with a yellow color clue instead; a color clue usually reveals only 1 card to play and the third player would play slot 1 and only that card from the clue; the advantage of not revealing the other 1y as 1 is that nobody needs to do anything else to prevent this player from bombing the other 1y; after 1m plays, 1 clue reveals it as trash and can be discarded; and when everybody understands context even better, someone could mark that other 1y as 1 to make it discard right after first 1y plays (because if it was 1m, 1 clue would be better than yellow clue in the first place)

I would not put any blame on Osnowe in that game. His bomb was simply an attempt to play 2b as *finesse* from the blue clue by Didou.
Didou on the other hand seemed to behave like a frustrated kiddo, not understanding he has joined a game with someone still learning the ropes (based on your rating).

If you are into learning & improving your hanabi game, I'd recommend checking out hanab.live website. The community there is a lot friendlier and eager to review and explain every mistake after a game. The downsides are it's a lot smaller and majority of players there play hgroup convention system, which I like less than bga convention system, it's a lot more complex. Nowadays I don't play either of those convention systems.

Thanks for the helpful information.
Osnowe I am sorry for taking you as a bomber, although the aggressive chatting was unnecessary.

You‘d want to edit out all names of your posts, otherwise that will get you moderated. Aggressive chat can be reported through their profile.

And I invited you to our group of ppl that don‘t bomb out games if something goes wrong.

Lots of questionable decisions for such a short game:

First, your opening clue was fine. Why the person you clued 1 to didn’t clue yellow is beyond me: they capture a play, and capture m2 (valuable) with no risk of them gentleman discarding wrong card if their one is also yellow (ie, it isn’t m1 and he “guessed” wrong color)

I don’t generally love discarding on first turn, most don’t, but there’s nothing wrong with it either. If the 1 you clued isn’t in finesse position (which it wasn’t) player 3 could have the matching 2 but couldn’t draw it out with the 2; so unless you clued finesse position, indicating no finesse or bluff was possible, I wouldn’t discard , but again; that’s preference not convention

You clueing two yellow 1s is a very poor clue. Not just because you “skipped”; most of the time skipping is fine if there’s a reason; and in this case there was, 8 tokens. But you don’t ever want to skip and clue the leftmost card, bc you’ve just removed all bluffs, which is best way to save 2s in three player games (and 4 and 5)

However your clue is a guaranteed bomb. If anything if you felt compelled to clue it, clue yellow and it can be corrected easier with a 1 clue once m1 is down

Why they clued blue to you is beyond me; you had no play and player 2 had no playable on left. Generally mid game if that happens someone misread the cards, but that early not sure how they could think b2 was down after one play.

Once player 2 bombed you are being told your blue isn’t playable, otherwise they would not play blind off left, so responding with another bomb is not good. Sometimes an intentional “bluff bomb” is actually useful, rare, but useful, but this wasn’t it. Meaning, perhaps you have m2, b4, and b5 as next 3 chop cards and other player has m2 or b4 on chop, you can save a valuable 2 and two critical cards in exchange for one bomb of a non-5. Again, rare and watching replay I thought maybe that’s what it was, but no, just a bad clue. But once they bombed don’t bomb also as they’ve just told you it’s not b2

The last bomb was just throwing game

On a side note, with your lack of experience you might want to not play the hardest setting . Play just black powder, or just avalanche, then six color with black, then avalanche with black

I see a lot of games of 0 in your Hanabi which might just mean you’re in over your head , which is noble; but difficult. As someone else said: with your ELO rating, partners have to know you’re learning , but I’d recommend getting down the conventions and more exp with situations (such as dup cards, fix clues, etc) at regular games before jumping to the most comppex

You can filter the players you accept to play with by selecting a minimum karma ratio.

I used to accept only players with 85% or more. This option exists when you create a new table

and for the tables you join
