Can you take a stone with only 2 cards?

Hello,
I just played a match where by changing some numbers, that could have happen.
It's always in end game, and you play like 9/6 or better, and the opponent have no card played on it: they can't do a color run, three of a kind, color, and strangly can't do a run neither. And so your opponent will be playing sum there.
If their hand isn't that strong, 9/6 can be enough to win win in theory.

Can you do that?
If yes, do you have an example where that matter?

For what it's worth, this is in the BGG FAQ:

You must have 3 cards at a stone to claim it.
In some cases you can logically prove that a stone will be yours even though you've only played 2 cards. E.g. you have 9-6 (wild rabble) and your opponent has 1-4 (provably weaker wild rabble).

Nonetheless you cannot yet claim the stone, because the English rules explicitly say that "you must have a complete three-card group on your side of the respective boundary-stone." You need to play a 3rd card before you can claim it.
