Quitting arena games

Post by pgmast »

I get it when you can see that you’re not going to win. It’s not fun. That’s happened to me plenty. Quitting or conceding means you can get out and play another game,

Here’s my issue though - you shouldn’t be able to quit in Arena because it impacts points.

It’s happened to me twice in as many days. I play out the games where it’s obvious I’m round 1 that I’m going to struggle. But I shouldn’t be penalised the arena points when the reverse happens and I get the luck. I’m now approx 20 or more points down because of sore losers.

I don’t think that’s fair.

Am I the only one who feels like this or do I need a teaspoon of concrete (to harden the f up)?

This is a problem with any multiplayer game. The problem is, there is no way to write code to evaluate who is "going to win" when a player quits. SO, even though it might be obvious that one player is going to win against the other two players, the game code does not know that, and so it gives a dual win to both players who did not quit.

It's a problem without a solution. This issue has been discussed countless times in the forums.

I will say that I haven't read the other topics on this subject. However, While I understand that you can't code a solution for the remaining players, couldn't there be a bigger disadvantage to the person quitting arena games? Maybe no entry to arena games for that game for a week? (I'm not sure what a fair punishment for quitting a competitive game should be) That way there would be zero advantage to the quitter for doing it.

Apologies if something like this is already in place. Personally quitting games, arena or otherwise, is something I don't enjoy as it spoils the playing experience. This doesn't happen over the board to me so I find it frustrating online. I tend to then block those players for me to avoid in the future - I always select it as my own opinion. Just for clarification, I don't have any problem with conceding in two player games.

It is an emotive subject as those sorts of decisions affect all other players.

The problem there is that it would excessively punish someone who legitimately intended to finish the game but couldn't. Maybe the internet went out, and the player did not have quite enough time to reset the device and get back online. Or any number of things.

I understand that it is not possible to separate players who remain in the game.
However, I do not understand what happened to me twice this season.
And again this morning: https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=764720197
Is this a bug or what? 0 points earned? How is that possible? I should at least have earned the victory points against the player who left the game, right?

Right, but you also lost points due to your "tie" with a lower ranked player, making the total 0 (or negative, but clamped to zero because the results were cancelled).

I pretended not to have noticed that point ^^, so you replied that it was normal, thank you!

But it does not seem to be fair. Since we can't know the final result between me and this other player, we cannot deduce any conclusion about the winner or tie and even less about lost or win ELO/Arena points. The only thing we can conclude is that a player left the game and the victory goes to the remaining players against him.

Wait.

If one player quits a 3-player game, it penalizes the higher rated of the other two players by assigning a tie between those two other players? How does that make sense?

Just assign each of them a win against the quitter, and a NR (no result) against each other.

Right, but you also lost points due to your "tie" with a lower ranked player,
This is obviously a flaw that I thought had been fixed a long time ago (in all games, not just Wingspan).
