Status of the game, thoughts on balance, getting game out of beta

Post by FrankJones »

I realize this forum does not get a lot of traffic. Most of the posting is done by me. This post is mainly intended for IvTuzovsky (the game designer) and MGoulet (The developer for this BGA implementation). Certainly, all input from anyone is very much welcome too 😊

This is one of my favorite games, and I am hoping this post leads to overall improvement in the game and getting it out of Beta.

I am wondering whether this game is still in active development. It has been in Beta for a long time now, with only a few remaining open bug reports. The last bug fix was more than 3 months ago.

There still exists the following issues:

1) Researcher not being resolved correctly
2) Turtle and Xander not being able to claim the 5 fully raised goal, despite an official ruling that such an action is valid
3) Theseus and Healer sometimes not being allowed to be played, even though a character should always be allowed to be played – and then perform as many of the required actions as possible (which might be no actions).
4) Adela effects possibly being resolved in the wrong sequence.
5) Manta’s Leader’s power is not consistent with the newest edition of the game, whereas all the other cards are. The newest edition gives Manta’s Leader +1 power, not +2 power.
These are all described in the bug reports forum, except for Manta’s leader, which I might create a new bug or suggestion report for.

Additionally, the instructions at the top of the screen might be confusing to some players:

“[Player_name] must play a character or complete a goal”.

Actually, the options are “perform additional actions or play a character”. It is not necessary to say, “or complete a goal”, especially since a goal cannot be completed on many of the turns. If a goal can be claimed, the goal circle lights up and flashes.

After resolving the effects of playing a character, the text changes to “You may complete a goal”.
Better would be “perform additional actions or end turn”.

One final point – a suggestion that I believe would greatly improve the game:

Equalize the number of turns. (There is a rule in the Coral reefs expansion that suggests this for one of the ways to play.) Meaning, when someone triggers end-game, complete that round, then play one more round, with all players getting a turn in that final round, regardless of who triggered end-game.

I believe the base game needs this to have any balance. Using a 2-player game as an example: Player 1 has a huge advantage. There are numerous reasons, which I won’t go into here unless someone asks me to. I have studied this question extensively, based on my experience playing a large number of games, including many at a high level against strong opponents. Simply put: Allowing player 1 to trigger the end game and then gain an extra turn is an advantage worth 10-20 points. Drafting kings is nowhere near enough compensation to counter this imbalance.

I realize this would mean a major change, but it would be easy to implement here for the digital adaptation.

I can provide some very persuasive statistics and explanations if requested.

Are you in touch with the developer? It would be a shame of they've just disappeared and development has stalled, especially as it seems like a couple of the bugs you've identified should be straightforward to fix in code.

I'm not sure how it works on BGA with other developers stepping in to fix bugs and add features if games are abandoned but seems like it would make sense if it's possible, and I'd be up for putting in a few hours to fix some of the issues, if it was possible to get access to the code, and then be able to actually deploy it.

I discuss the game often with the designer of the physical game - he plays here on BGA.

I have not had much discussion though with the developer of the digital implementation here. He did say recently , in answer to my question about the timetable to get the game out of Beta:

"Developer can’t do anything about it. It’s something between Publisher and BGA (release calendar)"

which I found rather odd, and I have not received any additional information yet. I would assume the publisher and BGA would both prefer the game be out of Beta sooner rather than later, and that bugs be fixed and expansions added.

Well I've signed up for the BGA Developer Studio, and I can't see any documentation about limits on the developer being able to update a game they're responsible for. It certainly doesn't make any sense that the developer wouldn't be able to do bug fixes - there would be many cases when you'd need to be able to make fixes independently of BGA or Publisher release cycles, e.g. security issues, cheating, browser updates, BGA system updates.

What does the game author say about that situation? Are there any other angles to pursue?

Now that the game has been fully released, would you say that the issues you mentioned have been sorted out?

Mostly.

Last I checked, the following had not been fixed:

1) Manta's leader power of +2 not yet corrected to the +1 to match the card in the physical game most recent edition.
2) The Bug with Xander not being able to claim the 5 fully raised location goal. This was fixed with the Turtle, but not Xander.

It has been a few days since I checked, so maybe those were fixed.

But most important, there still exists the severe player 1 imbalance, which has made me lose a lot of interest in the game.

And, it's finally in Arena, but with the beginner settings "no king" and "starting goals".

WHY........

Thanks for the update! Did you post bug reports for these issues? I guess the developer looks more at those than at the forum. But hopefully my replies also help get more eyeballs on your posts.
