I know this specific issue has been discussed before, but it's hard to search for because BGA made "Elo" a stop word in the forum search engine.

Here's one place the issue was previously discussed: https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=35359

I still can't find a fix being announced or discussed.

However, While I understand that you can't code a solution for the remaining players, couldn't there be a bigger disadvantage to the person quitting arena games? Maybe no entry to arena games for that game for a week? (I'm not sure what a fair punishment for quitting a competitive game should be) That way there would be zero advantage to the quitter for doing it.

Apologies if something like this is already in place. Personally quitting games, arena or otherwise, is something I don't enjoy as it spoils the playing experience. This doesn't happen over the board to me so I find it frustrating online. I tend to then block those players for me to avoid in the future - I always select it as my own opinion. Just for clarification, I don't have any problem with conceding in two player games.

It is an emotive subject as those sorts of decisions affect all other players.
The problem there is that it would excessively punish someone who legitimately intended to finish the game but couldn't. Maybe the internet went out, and the player did not have quite enough time to reset the device and get back online. Or any number of things.
I honestly don't see this as much of problem. Yes it would suck to get punished for a failing internet connection but this should happen very rarely and if it is a common occurrence than maybe u shouldn't play competitive game modes. As the OP mentioned, leaving the game early punishes the other players who are still in the game too.

All in all losing 50% more elo or something for quitting early(in 3+ player games, no need for it in 1v1) would only noticeably effect the players who do it on purpose in the long run. Other online games i have played have these kind of systems in place, that if u are the quitter you get a harder hit on your rating, no matter if it was a real disconnect or not. The argument provided there too is that, well if u have such a dodgy connection that it happens frequently than u shouldn't queue up for bunch of ranked games either sense it ruins the fun for the other players in the game as well. I think that is a fair point.

That's a good point. Also, don't most people have a cell phone anyway? I actually have dodgy internet, but I never forfeit because of it. The rare times I play real-time (mostly Terraforming Mars or Spades, because I hate playing those turn-based), I have the cell phone ready as backup if my internet goes out temporarily.

How do you quit? I’ve played a few people who have had game aborted and or or conceited the game but I don’t know how to do it. I would like to do it when it’s so obvious in the first round that I am going to lose because of the cards I’ve got the cards I’ve got I just don’t know how to do it. I would like to just consider the game when something comes up too if yeah and I can’t continue for some reason love or if the Internet is playing up and just dropping out all the time and I’ve got no response. This only happens a small percentage of the time but it’s enough I was like I can see. I can’t find out how people are doing it. Can someone please give me a pointer. This is not an arena game by the way. I’ve not good enough to play an arena again yet.

You cannot concede a game until it reaches 50% progression. You find it by opening the upper right "hamburger menu" (the icon that looks like 3 horizontally stacked lines) during a game, and there will be an option to "Concede."

Agree and I think this is a good idea to disincentivise quitting early, especially if it’s only applied to arena games.

Where can I add this to a suggestion box somewhere?

Right, but you also lost points due to your "tie" with a lower ranked player,
This is obviously a flaw that I thought had been fixed a long time ago (in all games, not just Wingspan).
The previous bug (marked fixed on 2024-09-03) is https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=101617 and was expressly mentioned in these threads:
viewtopic.php?t=38315
viewtopic.php?t=35924
viewtopic.php?t=36255

So if I understand correctly, the result of that fix is that your total Elo change on a table where an opponent quit is at least 0. But (as others point out in this thread), it's still rather unfair that your Elo gain from the win against the player who quit is set off against your Elo reduction from the deemed tie against another non-quitting player who has lower Elo.

So there's no bug in this fix, as in the value of the Elo score didn't actually decrease. It's just lower than it should be if the artificial tie wasn't factored in. I took the statement that Elo was "lost" in this instance at face value.

There’s no bug to be fixed per say, the current experience of people “taking the hit” on their reputation so that they don’t have to play a hand/draw/game they think they will lose disadvantages the true winner because of the artificial tie.

FrankJones wrote: 21 November 2025, 13:54 This is a problem with any multiplayer game. The problem is, there is no way to write code to evaluate who is "going to win" when a player quits. SO, even though it might be obvious that one player is going to win against the other two players, the game code does not know that, and so it gives a dual win to both players who did not quit.

It's a problem without a solution. This issue has been discussed countless times in the forums.
Heat solved this issue over a year ago that all games play to conclusion regardless. Wingspan could easily implement the same thing, though I don't know who you have to lobby for the change, but the point is the solution and code for this already exists on the site, it's not written in stone that someone quitting the game voids the result.
