"I was kicked from the game even though it was my opponent's turn"

Post by FrankJones »

I have never had this happen. But I have seen a recent increase in the quantity of such bug reports in Terraforming Mars.

Does anyone know whether the recent site changes are causing this to happen more often or for reason not previously known to cause this problem?

Veteran players whom I speak to regularly have not encountered this issue. Typically, when this happens, there is some issue on the user's side. Their internet or browser or some setting is causing lag or delay in updating the game state. Or, they have a different browser window as the active window.

There's nothing in the Terraforming Mars code that would cause this bug, so I always mark them as "wontwix", because, well, there's nothing we can do.

I have very occasionally has a turn-based game showing it to me my turn, but when I load the game, it shows it to be my opponent's turn. This is not specific to any one BGA game, and it has been very rare. Since most of my games are turn-based, it is a non-issue that resolves itself fairly quickly.

I have never had this happen in a real-time game unless my internet connection was having problems, in which case I load BGA on my phone (since that does not require an internet connection).

Does anyone have any insight into this situation? It's frustrating that the bug forum is clogged with these posts that have nothing to do with the Terraforming Mars code.

If I had to guess, it might be related to the recent change(s) that were made on the BGA side, coinciding with the recent influx of reports where the game appears to replay itself.

This happens even without using the "replay from" feature, just by loading pages and then one of the players making an action.

I never saw this happen prior to the last week, as far as I remember, and it may result in a player getting kicked from the game because they wait until the animations finish, not realizing they should instead try to reload the page to work around the bug.

True, there has been a significant increase in that occurrence. But I'm specifically referring to situation in which the player claims that nothing is happening on the screen, nothing is being replayed, but rather, that the player is waiting for the opponent to make a move when in fact, unbeknownst to the player, it is his or her own turn and the opponent is actually the one doing the waiting.

This has been an issue for many players since long before these recent changes, but it seems to be happening more often now.

Ah, I see.

I can only theorize that might be related to connection/timeout issues, but without input from BGA on what changed in the recent update, it's hard to even guess.

That has been happening for me much more often too for a few days now. I have to constantly reload to not miss my turn. I thought maybe my laptop is just getting old, but sounds like it does not only affect me. Not fun playing like this unfortunately. I dont play Terraforming Mars, its happening in other games.

I don't play real time games, only turn based, but I _have_ noticed something possibly related recently: The games in progress page, listing all of your active tables, used to update automatically to show you which games it's your turn in. Recently, most of the time it doesn't update "live" like that, and I have to reload to get it to update. So, for example, if I make a move in a game in a different tab, that game will still show up as being my turn on the games in progress page on the other tab, until I reload the page.
