Pause a game .

Post by TheOneSpyke »

I would be nice to pause a game for an extended period of time if all participants agree. Just stop everyone's timer. I belong to a group that has a weekly game session. This time we got into a much longer than expected game. We would have liked to pause the game, and resume it next week. Especially considering how much we had already invested in the game, and everyone was enjoying it. It would be unfair to have one person's timer to keep running and take the reputation hit.

Maybe that setting would be useful, but there is a workaround that's almost the same.

If you are playing with friends, there is zero reason not to create the game as turn-based, even if you plan on finishing the game in one sitting. Why? Just because the setting says "one move per two days" doesn't mean you're prohibited from playing faster. I always set up games with people I know as slow turn-based games unless the game takes less than 15 minutes. This allows people to step away for bathroom breaks, to take a pot off the stove, answer the door, etc., without worrying about the clock.

The slowest turn-based setting is +2 days per turn (maximum 6 days). If you were playing your weekly session and couldn't finish the game, at the end of your session everyone's clock will be at 6 days. So one person's clock will almost cover the entire week until your next session. Yes, the person whose turn it is will have to take one for the team and make ONE move during that week. That's all it takes. One person to wait at least a couple days and make one move so that the next person's clock will not expire until after your session the following week. That does not seem unduly onerous to me. Even if you're playing a game where sometimes all the clocks run simultaneous, it still only requires one move during that week from everyone and no one will run out of time.

Even if someone's time runs out, that doesn't represent a reputation hit. It will have no effect on reputation unless someone else expels the player, and that should not happen if you're playing among friends and you all agree to pause the game.

Some people are sensitive about the little clock symbol in their profiles.

Thanks, meep. I think that turn based plan will would well. The "next player" could just make one more four day later, then no one's timer runs out.

As Jellby noted there is no karma penalty just for running out of time. That penalty is only applied if someone gets expelled from the game, which doesn't happen automatically. What will happen when you run out of time is the little clock icon on your profile will increment by 1. If that is what you mean by "reputation hit," then use the turn-based plan I laid out. If you are only worried about karma penalties, then no one has to make a move at all as long as you all know each other and know no one is going to expel a player who runs out of time.

... and as long as it's actually a turn-based game. Real-time games are automatically abandoned after 4 hours of inactivity, but you can switch a real-time game to turn-based too.
