Re: Incorrect count of SCIENCE buildings

Post by swibat »

I'm resurrecting this post because I discovered something very weird. Latest example (but not the first) in this lucky win I had (very good card pool) :

https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=772272821

The game somehow decides that the scientists guild is worth 10 points, as well as the agora effect. 10 points on a science symbol means ONLY completing the second set so I thought it was not possible and counted. It took me a while and I had help from one of my opponents, but my green setting with 3 additionnal free symbols add up to the following, when maximized : 6 cogs, 2 tablets, 2 compasses, for a total of 36+4+4+14=58 pts. The display says 38 from green, 10 from the guild and 10 from agora. It makes NO SENSE, but the total is correct : 38+10+10=58 pts.
The explanation seems to be that my wonder stage is counted as a "green card" and thus a cog. The guild alone would switch the stage to a tablet/compass and counts as a compass/tablet, for 3 sets : 48 pts. Agora turns all of these into cogs, counts as a cog itself and, by doing so, adds 10 pts.
Other possible explanation : greens + wonder is 4 cogs, 2 tablets, 2 compasses for 38 pts. So the guild is 9 pts, and the agora is 11 pts (further additionnal cogs). 10 is the average. In that case agora effectively "doubles the points", even if the 10 pts being doubled don't come from any symbol on their own.
I don't know which one is correct but either way the effect takes into account what the additionnal symbols would do, without being actual symbols in the resulting display. How the hell is it implemented ? There has to be some computational reason for that mess (it's not a bug because every time I encountered this the total was correct).

It annoys me a bit because it makes the agora rule with science extremely confusing. I'm very familiar with the game, but I think about anyone discovering the expansion : how are they supposed to understand that ??

I remember looking at the rules after my last post above and coming to the conclusion that it makes sense for the agora to give you one additional symbol, as explained by 6element.

With that interpretation in mind, your first explanation makes sense when looking at the deltas:
  • 2-2-3 and 1 joker -> 2-2-4 -> 4+4+16+2*7=38 points
  • 2-2-3 and 2 jokers -> 3-3-3 -> 9+9+9+3*7=48 points
  • 2-2-3 and 3 jokers -> 2-2-6 -> 4+4+36+2*7=58 points
I don't know if that's how it's actually implemented. I agree that it can be confusing. It makes you wonder where each number is coming from and why guild and edifice get to contribute but not the wonder. Some people would probably prefer to just get the final result of 58 while others would then wonder whether that means the guild and edifice is worth nothing. I can imagine integrating an in-game explanation with all the details would require a fair bit of effort, depending on the existing implementation.
