Gosu Tournament Rules Variant

Post by EdwardLCote »

On a Youtube video I saw that Gosu has a variant where you start the game by drafting hands. I was wondering if we could get that as an option. Thanks.

Hello,

Tournament rules for Gosu will be implemented with the extension (Kamakor).

Cheers,

Agreed. Being able to play 3 cards from opening hand vs. 6 makes a vast difference.

I have noticed this game can occasionally produce nice, contesting board states but just as often can create points of no return; more specifically, if you have no more cards in hand OR cannot play your cards, you've utterly lost. The only thing that can get you back into the game is if you're playing with 3 or more people and they start playing goblins that give the "player(s) who are losing most" cards. I've had times that I've gone three straight rounds doing little beyond drawing 3 (with tokens) mutating a L1 goblin, and praying, while my opponents play action after action to steamroll me. This unwinnable situation creates a nasty and frustrating situations for everyone. Even Race for the Galaxy, itself a very skill-testing game, gives you some "outs" in those situations.

In so many words, this feels like a game that requires house rules to be both playable and fun, and that's not a good thing. Monopoly has a bad name in the board game industry for a reason. I have a few suggestions to this end.

Suggestion: add a Concede button. There are unwinnable situations that are very easy to recognize after you've played a few times, sometimes as early as 5-10 minutes in, before any round is complete. I'd like to simply be able to concede these for 5 REP rather than having to do so for 20 REP, or having to wait through the game of Solitare my opponent is playing.
Suggestion: add a take-back button. When I'm forced to discard 4 Tier III cards because I misclicked "mutate", and lose as a result, it's really not fun (yes, this happened my last game).
Suggestion: Add a rule to 'mulligan' or otherwise get a new hand. This could be implemented through the Tournament rules, but a lousy starting hand is a recipe for disaster.

Then there's a functional rules change that I feel would make the game far more enjoyable. One of the two following should be implemented:

Suggestion: the loser of the great battle (at round's end) with the lowest number of Goblins On Board + Cards in Hand draws 4 cards for free at the end of the round. Some of the Tier III cards to this, but most of the Tier I and II cards only serve to bury you deeper in your hole. This rules change would really make the game much less one-sided.
OR
Suggestion: add another Activation token. Four would be too many, but two is just to few - or to use an of-repeated term too "skill testing".
