original games / games which don't exist as board games

Post by megafischer »

Is it okay to (try to) develop a game for BGA that is an original game that does not exist as a board game?
Or ist BGA strictly for digital versions of board games which already exist physically?
I already made some math and some word games but they lack multiplayer functionality.

I believe the games need to have been or currently commercially available

No there is no restrictions in term of "game has to be commercially available".
But you can check user/site license agreement of what you could do. For example you cannot do accounting software as pretend its a boardgame.
It has to be some sort of game and you have to own the rights or have license available.

Note that we won't make public on BGA a game that doesn't exists for real.
But you can still do it on the Studio, for practice purpose.

what's the scope for these "real" games ? what about abstract games and card game made with generic components?

Shobu, I think you can look at the rules of Elongo -- the rulebook just doesn't work on a table, since its mention of "mouse clicks" and "game implementation" are all over the place, yet it gets approved.

So the bar of "real" games must have been very low, just don't ask (and they'll pretend to have a high bar because everyone feels better with a high bar), go ahead :)
