A problem of matryoshka or spaceshifter

For example if in round 7, I can choose 2 C-cards but there are 4 matryoshka and 1 other card, and I choose 4 matryoshka then remove 4 cards, theoretically I can still choose 2 cards, but there are only 1 cards on the table, then it will be:
1.I can choose the remaining card on the table and get another card in some way.
or
2. I can only get the remaining card on the table?
It may be rare but I'm curious if someone had met this situation.

I've had this situation in round 7. I drew 5 cards: 4 matryoshka and a unicorn. I took them all, using all 4 matryoshka removal effects. I was then presented with a message that I had no cards left to pick from, so I ultimately only got to use 1 of my 2 picks.

In retrospect, I should have just not used the 4th matryoshka's optional effect.
