Irish Gauge towns and cities

Post by matt186 »

Hi, it's my first time posting on a transition board, so apologies if I don't follow etiquette that I'm not aware of. Could someone help fix this potential issue? It may already be known but in case it isn't..

In English, Irish Gauge has "town", "city" and "major city".
In German, "Stadt" is used for town, "Großstadt" for major city, and currently it looks like Großstadt is also used for (non-major) city, which could cause confusion.

A solution could be to translate town as Landstadt, leaving Stadt free for city but I'll defer to the native German speakers.

Thanks!

Landstadt is a small town, and not a major city.

My suggestion: Dorf (town), Stadt (city) and Hauptstadt (major city).

(Or "Metropole" for major city, depending on theme of the game.)

To add to that, Landstadt is also a very technical term, tbh I didn’t even know the word existed, even though I’m a native speaker with a special interest in languages. Everything I have to add is not directed at you Thomas, but at Matt as a non-native speaker bc I guess they’ll be the one to make the changes, as both of us do not know the game in detail.

While Dorf means village, I think Dorf is a good idea, as it (opposed to Landstadt or Kleinstadt) is clearly distinct from Stadt (city), just like “town” is distinct from “city”. As major city contains “city”, I’d go for Großstadt or Hauptstadt. Großstadt is the literal translation, while Hauptstadt means capital, so I prefer Großstadt as it only denotes size, just like major city. That being said, the official translation in Spanish is pueblo (Dorf, village) and ciudad capital, so they went for the Hauptstadt equivalent. I didn’t check for historical accuracy though, I’ve no idea if Ireland back then was divided into several independent regions (so Hauptstadt could make sense) or if was a state like it is today (which cannot have several Hauptstädte, but can have several “Großstädte”).

Ich kenne das Spiel nicht, aber "Hauptstadt" ist doch die politische Hauptstadt ("capital"). Das ist für mich etwas anderes als eine "major city".

Das Wort "Landstadt" habe ich auch noch nie gehört.

Mein Vorschlag: Dorf (town), Stadt (city) und Großstadt (major city).
