Why do we keep trash cards

Post by Madlaine »

Since we took great freedom with the base game by revoming wood duck against all logic and adding Swift Pack even though i don't even have those cards in my physical gamebox, can we consider removing TRASH cards such as Great Crested Flycatcher ? that would be much appreciated and we would stop scoring 60 points just because the dices decided you *** off. American Redstart is here, ok fine, lets level up or remove all the old useless cards.

I understand the idea of removing the weakest cards, but you can always ignore them. They don't cause as much trouble as already banned cards, which win games on their own and create not very interesting game situations.

And Great Crested Flycatcher is not a bad bird, you can play it right away and get extra food, I wouldn't mind starting each game with 4 random cards and Flycatcher. However, of course it has stronger counterparts.

Removing the Wood Duck was debatable, I agree, there is a competitive community (which I’m not allowed to name) that plays with the Wood Duck and just excludes the Power 4 from being played in R1 (something that clearly wouldn’t work on BGA, so there’s no alternative to removing them). But a game should only be changed if it’s more or less broken, and some weak cards don’t make a game broken. As for the merits of the Great Crested Flycatcher, I agree with Andrei.

Surely you're not serious?

That bird costs 2 food, is worth 5 points, has room for 3 eggs, and gives a worm when activated.
I just won a game yesterday with that bird as my primary forest bird.

I am very surprised to see a very capable player listing the Flycatcher is a trash bird. There are so many far worse birds.

Removing Wood Duck was a pretty obvious call that has made things better. Not sure why we'd be checking your physical gamebox for what cards can be added to Wingspan either. Great Crested Flycatcher is a solid card, I'd be content having one in my opening hand. There being better, even strictly better, cards doesn't change that. Flycatcher gets you in the game and able to play.

Genuine garbage cards would be the likes of Acorn Woodpecker, Black-Bellied Whistling-Duck. I could understand removing those for the sake of making hands more playable. It's definitely a different sort of ban than with the power 4 and Wood Duck, where we're not really saying the cards are broken, just that filtering them out will improve gameplay by having fewer completely dead hands.

Until you have to ignore your entire hand and throw it down the drain. The OP's examples and basically everything except the premise are all messed up, but removing unplayable birds to reduce the number of hands you'd just toss to have 5 food isn't a bad idea. It's definitely not like the power bans, where the cards break the format. It's more of a filtering so that there are more playable hands to work with.

The acorn woodpecker and the dozen cards that are nearly identical. Very frustrating to draw those birds.

Black-bellied whistling duck is definitely annoying to draw. It's cool with expansions when you draw the maned duck, but otherwise it's just a really bad bird.

I had to start a game recently with The American White pelican as my only water bird - but at least that gave me 5 points.
Conveniently, I also had the Bird Counter bonus card.)

As usual, I never actually activated the brown power.

Regarding the wood duck, I want to say that I played with it only 4 times and the minimum number of points I scored was 128. Despite the fact that these are only games where it was available at the beginning of the first round and the players were a little less experienced than me, the results are still stunning

I agree that removing the weakest birds to improve the smoothness of the game is a reasonable idea.

Regarding the weak birds at the beginning of the game: I recently won a game where my first move was the Great Crested Flycatcher without playing an extra bird.

Dozen nearly identical cards?
