IRL? / alternate rule idea

Post by AMA3 »

Howdy! First, a question: has anyone ever played this game in real life? I tried to get a copy but it seems to not be available in the United States. I wonder if it's more fun to play IRL?

While I generally enjoy the game, I've come to believe that success depends primarily on which cards you're lucky enough to draw at various points in the game. Early on, the cards that provide an extra card, permanent moon token, blue die, extra roll or red die seem most important. Later on, cards that give five points and/or "?" cards seem especially necessary. Cards that require many moons to validate seem to just waste space, until maybe late in the game when one has enough moon cards and tokens to validate them. If you draw mostly the later cards too early and the earlier cards too late, there doesn't seem to be much chance of winning. :(

It seems to me that the combination of randomness from the dice and randomness from the draw is just too much randomness.

One reason I would like the hardcopy is to test an idea I have for alternate rules that might replace much of this randomness with actual strategy. Specifically, I'd like to try replacing the blind draw with a market. Perhaps this would include about 10 face up cards, and if too many of one card show up, they can be wiped and replaced. Or, perhaps all cards could be divided into matching face up stacks, and when a player selects a card, they can choose from all available types based on personal strategy, free from randomness.

Any thoughts? Can anyone give one of these options a try IRL and let me know if it improves the game?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, not out in the US yet. I read something on Bluesky a while ago that said they were working on it, but I don't remember details.

I disagree about the luck aspect. I'm really enjoying the game and the luck/skill ratio is one of the reasons for that. It seems to me like there are enough workarounds that with careful play you still have a chance with moderately bad draws and rolls. The fact that there are players maintaing Elos in the 400s suggests that it's a game where good play will win out over time, even if you unavoidably lose a few. I'm maxing out at 300, which tells me I still have more to figure out about the game.

Of course, the mix of luck and skill is on a scale from Candyland to Chess, and where you like your games is subjective. For me this one is right in the sweet spot and is my current favourite game here.

I agree that something needs to be done. The opening card randomness is a joke, if someone has the one slot orange dice in their starting cards and the other player doesn't its game over.

---------------------

I agree with Emerson_Matt for the normal mode.
It is logical that in advanced mode, balance is more difficult to find and therefore the orange and blue bars are a bit disadvantaged.
Maybe it would be nice to have an extra "eye" with the orange bar. The 'bug' with the additional card (it was necessary to remove the 2 tokens instead of just one to lose the advantage) was also interesting and brought back a bit of balance. Note that the number of orange cards on BGA is different from the physical game, error? I noticed it on this color but what about the others?
In the same way as in normal mode, having a small set of cards with a bar color symbol from which to draw the initial cards for advanced mode could bring more balance.

I think it’s a great game and if nothing changes, that’s fine with me :D .

I disagree with Emerson. I love this game, but the amount of luck involved is just too much. I was at 400 ELO and dropped to 200 after a long losing streak (not due to my own incompetence). I think the starting combination of cards should be fixed to have balanced starts. Starting with cards that require three symbols without moon tokens is easier and gives a boost than starting with cards that require four symbols and two moon tokens. Strategy and luck can then fix things, but at least we start off equal and then each player develops their own game. The idea of a market from which to draw cards to replace the ones we're satisfied with is a nice one.

The basic game is pretty random, but you have some chance to recover by churning cards. The "advanced" game is just awful. If someone gets a really good speakeasy, they win. I don't understand why it's been chosen as the Arena format. Worse than just being random, you know who will win from the moment the game starts.
