Reputation loss, because of time

Post by mitxmax »

First of all. I love to play on bga. its great to have a plattform to play the games, you enjoy, also on an competitive lvl.

But what i don't enjoy and really frustrates me, is getting one reputation penalty after another.

I play a lot of Ark Nova lately, and some turns you just have to think more or go through a lot of clickin actions, so time can run low, and i understand that this is part of the challenge, to make quick decisions, but the way you get punished just does not seem right to me.

i totally get that players can use this to give you an automatic game-loss (which is in itself a questionable move), but i would be fine, with getting a lose, and loosing mmr-rating, because, well im not the fastest player.
But the reputation system should not be a way to punish slow players out of the game, out of the ability to communicate, and furthermore out of the plattform.

Reputation can be rebuilt. It's not driving you out of the platform. You just have to stop the behavior that's causing your reputation to drop.

If you're struggling to play quickly enough, play at a slower time control. Others at the table want to play at a certain pace. If it's not what you want, then you shouldn't expect them to accommodate you.

There are countless threads on this topic, and the vast majority of players taking part in the discussion agree to what Strode said, I do as well. Many of them are aimed at Ark Nova, and even as a casual and meh player of this game, I can see why - many turns are very fast, so you’ll pick fast speed, but one or more of the final turns are really complicated so if you’re neither really quick nor like me (I just dont care enough to invest that much time in a turn), you need longer, and you get expelled. Please take into account that the reputation system is something that is the same for every game and every speed. I play mid to long games only turn-based (I mostly need the time in between the turns), and I find it very annoying if people aren’t able to do the one turn per day they’ve committed to, as I only play one table of each of my favorite games at a time to avoid mixing things up. If they don’t take their turn within in the time limit, not even in the additional half a day or day I give them, in the usual absence of a heads up regarding their plans, I think it’s perfectly alright to expel them and it’s perfectly fair that they receive a “double” penalty.

Even if you think you're fast at turn-based,you need to check that the playing hours suit you. Most of us have to sleep sometime.

Not sure which post you’re referring to - OP is talking about live games, and I’m talking about people who can’t take one turn in 48 hours (there are no playing times in one turn per day games).

Edit: In a one turn per day game, you start with two days on your clock.

The reputation system isn't there to punish slow players. It's there as a signal to others that someone frequently times out. You have a low reputation because you time out in over a third of your games.

Reputation is very easy to rebuild and I suggest you start playing games more suited to your playing speed

Yeah, you seem to be timing out on fast-paced Ark Nova games. Choose a different speed (or turn-based).
