Necessary technical improvements

Post by YaiHar »

I could enjoy this game a lot more with the following changes:
1. Add a confirm button before making a move. This is crucial to avoid misclicks, especially when playing on a phone.
2. Allow players to concede the game much earlier. It should be possible at 5% game progress instead of only at 50%. Forcing a player to continue playing after a blunder or when they know the game is lost is just cruel. :)

Anyone else agrees?

Yes, I totally agree with point 1: "Add a confirm button before making a move"

Thank you YaiHar for your input!
We thoroughly encourage the community to give us suggestions and report any bugs they may encounter, since it's impossible for us to guess what players want/need.

As for suggestion number 1, we are currently working on it. If you want to follow progress, you may do so here.
As for suggestion number 2, we would like, as much as possible, to keep in line with BGA's standard rules/procedures, but we will look into it and talk with Rui Alípio Monteiro (the game designer). Following your comment, we created a report for this as well here.

For those that may not know: there is a built-in BGA button for "Concede the game", found in the hamburger menu. Nevertheless, this is applied as YaiHar stated: "(in non-tournament 2 player games, a player may concede if the progression is at least 50%)" (source).

Both features will be added on the next release (26th or 27th October).

As always, the confirm move button will be optional.
Players that want to simply move a piece and not confirm the move, will be able to deactivate this feature in the options menu (player preferences).

As for progression, we are changing the way it is calculated.
On the next release, only the leading player's score is going to matter:
Leading player's score / 25 = Progression%
This means that when at least one player reaches 13 points, progression will be 52%, even if the other player still has no points.
Although this will take more than a couple turns, it will be a massive difference when compared with how it was calculated before.

We hope these changes are to your liking!

These two features are now live!

Thank you for testing the game and bringing these suggestions to our attention.

I just had my first play, and I feel the game would benefit very much from icons on the pieces indicating in which directions they can move. Or at the very least allow changing the selected piece without making a move with it and then undoing it. This would make learning the game considerably easier.

Thank you for trying out Trench and for sharing your concerns and ideas!

We believe that, in essence, what you suggest is already implemented and shown by default (please check the Game Preferences, by clicking the hamburguer menu in the top right corner of the screen).
Somehow, it may have happen that you had different preferences selected, but we suggest that you fiddle with them, as they may show you what you need. We like to give the player the possibility to customise the experience.

Although there aren't any arrows indicating the directions each unit may move, there are coloured overlays that show where each unit may move (and if any capture will happen).
For instance, if you check the first image in the "Advantages" section of the rules here, you'll see that, by default, the selected unit is coloured blue, the moves without captures are green, and the moves with captures are red.
If the player selects a different friendly unit, no move is made with the previous unit, and the system updates the possible moves accordingly.
Note: at the moment, it is NOT possible to check which moves are possible for enemy units. This idea is noted as a suggestion here. We don't plan on working on this in the following weeks, as we aren't sure how to implement this in fair way.

By default, the "Move Confirmation Prompt" is on. This shows a button at the top of the screen that you need to press to confirm that the move you made should be sent to the server. If you click a different unit or press "Cancel", the move won't happen.

We hope to have been clear and that your concerns were answered.
If not, or if you have any other suggestion, please share with is us so that we may improve this implementation even further!

All the best

Dear TheNameWasTaken,

It seems that more than one player has been suggesting something around making it easier to remember to which directions each unit type can move.
We noted it down here the idea of adding an optional reference sheet next to the board, and think we should be able to implement a solution in the near future.

Thanks again!

A reference sheet with the directions and number of steps each unit type can move is now implemented by default.
Players can also hide this reference sheet in the preferences.
