Bluff during Layer

Post by BusError »

Bob has 2y Xx [1y] Xx [1r].
Charlie has Xx 2w Xx 3y 4y.

Alice clues Y to Charlie, indicating 3y is playable, following a blind-play of 2y.

On the following turn, Bob draws 1b. Charlie discards Xx and draws Xx.

Alice clues W to Charlie. Should Bob play the newly drawn card, or continue the layer first?

With what was decided years ago with the hanabi group '2b or not 2b', Bob need to play the newly drawn card. That mean that this card could be a bluff like in your example.

With hgroup (so very rarely played on bga), you put full priority on the layered, which mean that if Bob got initially 1w 2y [1y] Xx [1r], the white clue still work.

Those two work well, but they are incompatible. So it easily causes bomb if one player assume everyone will play the same than what they think.

If first turn your hand is g1 y1 g2 xX, and someone clued g3, you have three cards to play. If there is a y2 on the board, getting that y2 can be pretty annoying. And so you have a card on the board which is not focusable with the decision of '2b' group. And after g1 play, that person only have g2 in hand, so they could be delaying if they have a good clue to give, which delay y2 even further. You have alternatives, but that's the main upside of hgroup. Those cases are rare though, so I prefer the decision of '2b' group.

nope, this sort of clue rarely ever works successfully as a Bluff.
- for starters, bob's other 1 (r1 in ur example) could easily be w1, so that is the card he would try to play after (or before, but i would advise against it) y2.
- but even if bob's second 1 is (somehow) known to be k1, bob could still have a hand like `w1 y2 y[1] x k[1]` (or `y2 w1 y[1] x k[1]`) at the time of the yellow clue, which would make both the yellow clue and white clue still work if bob played "normally".

If I know I'm playing a layered, I'll probably continue with it before playing the new clue.

Unless there is only one card remaining in the layered (so I know the newly clued card is not part of it), or there is an already clued card (e.g. a 1) that matches the new clue. Or if there were earlier negative clues and I remember them...

Thanks all. What I'm hearing is this isn't consistent here on BGA. I find both sides of this reasonable. Unfortunately, the player in question told me they would have to RT thumb since I didn't understand this basic, obvious and universally shared principle. Bummer.
