Overshooting

Post by Mr_Duby »

The rule states that "When coming out of a corner the car may not change lanes, but may stay in the same lane. If the move ends in another corner, this stop does not count for the new corner."
The rule that states that when you come outo of a corner and the move ends in another corner this stop does not count for the new corner is not being applied. Is this an option or a misimplementation of the rules?
Best regards!

I've definitely started in one corner, stopped in the next corner, and it counted as a stop for the corner my turn ended in.

Statement like this need links to a game in which it happened, preferably with the move number where it happened so you can fast forward to that point, so that a proper bug report can be submitted. Anecdotes about what you think you remember happening are not useful for bug reports.

This happens. It happened to me in either move 151 or 155 of my last Formula D game. I went from one corner to another, and it counted as me stopping on that last corner.

I cannot get the replay log to work for the life of me though, and I don't want to sit through an entire Formula D game replay just to get it to work. Anyone know how to get the replay log to jump straight to the move that you want? I can only jump straight to the end when the game is only over, or get stuck watching the entire game (151 and 155 were my 2nd last and last moves before my opponent beat me).

Start the replay. Under the control buttons for the replay is a link reading “Advanced replay features”. Click on that and then the right-most button will open a menu which, among other options, has “Go to specific move (fast)”. You can then go to move 150 in just a few seconds and step forward from there.

Point of etiquette: you should always provide a link to the table you are referring to. At this point it is no longer your last Formula D game and we are left with a little detective work to figure out what you are referring to. I assume it is this game?

What I see is you starting a move in one corner, ending it on another corner, and having it count for the second corner. But I find the rules on this point perhaps a little vague. The line “If the move ends in another corner, this stop does not count for the new corner” is in the section labeled “Overshooting”. I think the intent is to say “if you overshoot a corner and land in a second corner, the stop does not count for the second corner.

So, personally, I don’t think there’s anything wrong here; I think you just have to read that line as being in the context of overshooting.

I think it makes perfect sense. If you overshoot a corner, you shouldn't benefit by having your next stop (one that you should have made in the first corner) count for the next corner. But if you have fulfilled the requirements of the current corner, there's no reason (thematic or otherwise) why the next stop shouldn't count.

In fact, I had a suspicion someone had been confused by this and probably submitted it as a "bug" before and as I guessed someone did.....two years ago: https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=116822

To save you the click, the explanation from the developer:
The rules do, indeed, say "When coming out of a corner the car may not change lane, but must stay in the same lane. If the move ends in another corner, this stop does not count for the new corner." BUT just to ensure that there is no misunderstanding, this is under the "Overshooting" section and ONLY applies to corners where the car leaves without having stopped the requisite number of times.

If a car *has* stopped properly in a corner, then they are NOT required to travel in a straight line when they exit, and if they move into another corner on the same turn then their move DOES count towards the second corner. (emphasis added)

Ok thank you for the explanation.

Sorry. I did not realise how frustrating it would be in the future to not provide a link. I will do so from now on. That is the correct game.

Ah, that makes sense. I have misunderstood that rule. Because I haven't tried going to a new corner after overshooting it, after all the damage to your WPs would not be worth it. Thank you for the clarification.

Yes, that does explain why the corner does not count. Otherwise, it would defeat the purpose of losing the WPs as punishment for overshooting the corner in the first place.

Thank you both. You have clarified to me that I have misunderstood the rules. It makes much more sense now.
