What's the longest game you ever played?

Post by MarkSteere »

The longest game I ever played is size 5 (61 cell, hexagonal board) Churn on another site. Actually we haven't finished yet. We just passed the 1 year mark, and we're only on turn 3236 - not even halfway there.

Churn is finite, but has an extreme churn rate. Hence the name.

I find this enjoyable. There's a certain beauty in experiencing something unfold at a glacial pace. But most people (who've never played it) find it horrible, Sisyphean, "dying on Mt. Everest..." A lot of colorful descriptions.

I've started a couple of size 4 games on BGA. That only takes about 700 turns. The duration really starts to ramp up with increasing board size. A size 7 game (not programmed anywhere) would take about a million turns.

Any thoughts on long games?

I didn't know that there were such long games on bga and even real life. My longest game was a 7.5 hour IRL 2p terraforming mars game (there were also several munchkin and monopoly games of similar length, but I no longer consider them to be real games)

Maybe my DnD campaign which went on for a couple of years.

In one sitting it'd be a 12 hour TI4 game

Here, Reiner Knizia's My City took me several months.

At another site I have played Advanced Civ a few times - full games took the better part of a year. There was a story there about a game that lasted 8 years. By the end, none of the original players remained (you can drop out and let someone else take over).

I played Viticulture in realtime mode. Two of my opponents let their clock run down to 0:00 every single time it was their turn. What normally would be a 1 hour game took 3 hours.

I played a game of Red7 on "points" mode. You need 30 points to win, but we were only scoring 5-10 points per round, and each round was taking 15+ minutes. We agreed to abandon the game.
