Perikles in beta- now updated

Post by AmadanNaBriona »

Martin Wallace's classic game Perikles has been in beta for a couple of years. I took a break from BGA development for a while, but now I am trying to polish off the last things it needs to be ready for release.

Perikles is a hybrid Eurogame and wargame, and one of those old classics that I think doesn't get enough love. It never made BGG's hotness list as far as I know, and online reviews seem to be lukewarm, but I think it's a fun beer-and-pretzels game, not quite heavy-weight, that fits in a niche for those who like cubes and tiles and VP tracks and those who like dice-chuckers.

So, I am asking people to give it a try, rate and review it, and if you think it's ready, Approve it.

One of the things several reviews asked for was a "permission to defend" button. In Perikles, there are times when you want to send units to defend a location owned by another player. I had already implemented a set of buttons that allow players to grant permissions to other city-states, but I left it to the players to negotiate for this using the chat function (as you would at the table).

Many people felt this was insufficient, that there should be a way to explicitly send a request through the game that the other player could respond to by clicking a button. I was reluctant to do this-it was a lot of work to add a feature that was in my opinion unnecessary, but I guess I underestimated how much y'all hate talking to each other. :D And in fairness, I realized it would be harder for strangers who speak different languages to negotiate. So, this feature is now implemented. If you send a unit to defend someone else's location, it will automatically send a request to the owner, who can click "Allow" or "Deny." No talking necessary!
