The greatest card game of all time

I got this game yesterday for my birthday. I only then noticed the tagline “The greatest card game of all time”.

This game is so bad, so not tactical, so pure luck, so simple , so stupid, so brainless, so basic… so totally not the greatest card game of all time, that I just had to come here and rant about it.

Ok, I’m just really really really bad at it or I’m the unluckiest person that has ever played it, but that tagline just baited my rage.

I’m not prone to a gambling addiction, but seeing how crap I’m at this game and how I just keep on playing it is ridiculous.

It's like you read my mind! I have a feeling my ELO is terrible because I always shoot for 1st and then often come last, instead of settling for 2nd.

I've played 80 games and my win rate is 0.3. My ELO is 100 and can't get any lower.

Then I look at the player currently leading in Arena - a very impressive 1630 pts and ELO 333 - yet they have 66 wins from 227 games, so also a win rate of 0.3! What do they know that I don't??

Is there a secret ingredient to winning I'm missing or is this one of those King Fu Panda 'there is no secret ingredient' deals?

I hear you! Almost 100 games, about 28 wins and an ELO of 100.

People have posted tips how to raise your ELO, that’s theoretically possible. But it still all comes down to pure luck, who gets the right cards at the right time. I’ve busted on 2’s! I got second chance cards and flip the 0, the 1 and some other low cards. While my opponents draw the flip three and lucky bastard flips to 7 before I can finish my second chance.

Don't players often freeze those opponents they're concerned about? So you could take it as a sign of respect. They think you're too hot and need to be cool.

Haha, I never took notice of that „best cards game“ stuff on the box. But I like that. It’s like trolling in a fun, harmless way. To me, this game is really intriguing. When I play it, I can totally understand why people can get addicted to gambling. The randomness is ofc a massive factor in that. Yet there’s enough skill involved to get the feeling that you can actually influence the outcome.

As for a more serious note on freezing: whom to freeze is something that isn’t always straightforward. There’s an interesting thread about that in this forum. A typical situation is that I’m second and the player in 3rd place freezes me instead of the leader - to preserve some Elo which is perfectly rational and ok, but even though I know that I’m always like “Whaaat?” (just in my mind, not in the chat). This game just drives me crazy so easily. It’s for sure the game which is best in doing that, so there’s some truth in that statement.

I agree. I don't know how Flip 7 got so much hype. Clearly the "Greatest ..." tagline is marketing ... but so many people are pumping the tires on this game (in the BGG gaming community) when it is a "meh" game at best.

I also agree it is not the worst game ever ... totally casual, family group, gameplay acceptable. Easy to drink, laugh and play. BUT definitely not an outstanding game. It's like saying UNO is amazing ... no, it WAS not! (btw the WORST game I have found to date is Qwirkle cards)

Flip7 - I don't get it. (I mean I still own it ... but it's not a stellar card game). There are many other go-to, casual, newbie friendly, card/numbers games that I definitely prefer.

So I just played it IRL for the first time and… I won both games we played! Yay me!

I have to admit I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It’s quick (once everyone understands all aspects of the game). It’s fun to see the faces while making the decisions. My guests, one who doesn’t like games and one who has history of gambling problems both liked it. Of course the latter busted almost every time (to eager).

I can see the appeal as a simple game for a group of friends or even with kids. It’s not the greatest (indeed pure marketing), but fun IRL.

Flip 7 is a phenomenal party game. Accessible to all, tremendous fun, exciting. I played it in person recently with a large group and everyone had a great time.

It fails as a pure competitive game: ELO and Arena mode for Flip 7 is completely pointless, but it was never designed for that purpose. Grinding a heavily luck-based game like Flip 7 competitively will drain the fun out of the game and create jaded reactions like the ones in this thread.

From my perspective it has to be one of the greatest casual games. Rarely have I felt so much pure joy and excitement when playing a board/card game in person, and I'm sure everyone in that group would agree. The moniker is not unreasonable in that respect.
