Looking for competitive games with healthy communities to get invested in

Hi all,

I'm currently playing Agricola Arena mode and having a blast. People are very competitive and yet welcoming of new players. I'm looking to broaden my horizon a little bit and play 1 or 2 more games competitively. I'm looking for recommendations! I've tried Terraforming Mars but that did not click with me. I've started having a look at Terra Mystica, looks promising!

I would recommend Memoir’44 for its community.

But I realise I am heavily biased because I know a good deal of the players from playing in person.

Heat: Pedal to the Metal has a very healthy and good natured competitive community.

Not sure about the community aspect. but have you tried caverna?. It's similar to agricola.

Try Century: Spice Road! The game itself is excellent for competitive play, and the Arena is competitive accordingly. About the community: most players are good sports, there are only like 1 or 2 guys who get irate after losing.

Space Base is generally a good crew. You can get conversations going if there are 3 or more players. 2 player will be difficult because of the time between turns. Stay away from Catan.

Mr. 200+ Elo Lead is looking for tougher competition!

I have been quite involved in the Vale of Eternity community and I would say it has good vibes. It's a open drafting engine building / tableau building game with 2p arena that plays quite competitive. Skill/luck gap is enough that the best players can hit 600 Elo or 1900+ AES. There is a website with card images and strategy for the 70 cards. The card pool is intentionally small with only 70 cards so you learn to get good with each of them.

How active/competitive would it be for 2 player real timer that doesn't play Arena? Nice idea, but worse rating filters and the short Arena cycle would be hard to maintain with all of the different games I play. I recall there being a hosting conflict between Arena and regular play as well.

If you like Agricola, you can look up the top arena/elo players for Agricola, look at their profiles, and see what other games they play.

As long as waiting times for a game is less than a few minutes, that means there's enough players.

If you like Agricola, games of that type are "worker placement", and you can search for those.

I can recommend Azul. It's active, easy to learn, and has a great community.
