This message is directed to BGA management.

Post by Countes-Olivia-Manny »

BGA serves as an excellent platform for gaming; however, certain features, including ELO, Arena Red Thumbs, and Profile Security,
necessitate a comprehensive review to identify potential areas for improvement.

It is concerning that management at BGA has not yet addressed the numerous inquiries regarding these issues.

It's like wailing into the desert. They add 200 new games a year but don't address the most basic problems with the site. I assume the game developers work for free?

Many do, yes, as a labor of love to get a favorite game up here. A lucky few are paid by the game publishers. BGA personnel apparently do almost no game development these days, and don’t pay developers either.

Depends on your definition of "few" and "almost". BGA has one developper devoted to making games, thoun.
And there are probably at least ~30 ongoing freelance paid work currently I woud say. And the number in term of audience % is much more than that since basically any "popular enough" game will be developped by a paid deve.

1) BarnardsStar and Godsmurf were talking about game developers, but the original post was directed to site development issues.
2) As to game development, the initial development might be paid, but do they sign up for a lifetime of maintenance? If not, eventually a game will fall into a state in which ongoing maintenance is voluntary. You just have to hope that by then the game is stable.

Well I don't want BGA to do game development, I want them to get a developer to fix the years old bugs on this site, and maybe - we can dream - improve some features.

1) I know this wasnt OP initial topic, but the two replies kind of went the direction of "BGA gains a lot of money on the back of volunteer developpers and is just greedy and do nothing with this money". A fair amount of the revenue is actually to the publishers, and some money is also spent on game developpment. Not saying it's not a valuable company (otherwise Asmodee wouldnt have bought it in the first place), but just wanting to nuance it a bit.
2) The usual agreement is a 3 months maintenance after the game is released, which should be enough to remove any major bugs. A bug/suggestion free implementation can simply not exist, so the goal of this 3 months period is to try to get something reasonnable, knowing that in order to get release, all the major bugs and suggestions should already be fixed/implemented. So in theory, any paid work should be pretty stable at the end.

Back to OP topic : what would you say are the issues with the topics you mentionned ?

I appreciate the corrections here. I’m well aware of thoun’s work on a number of games but didn’t know they were a BGA employee.
I stand by the other half though. Maybe the majority of games played here are worked on by paid devs, but the number of unpaid devs does seem to dwarf the number of paid… so I guess it depends on the lens you use to look at the situation.
