anyway can a portuguese person, quand understand a brazilian portuguese? of course, they can as example in english we say ward that's behind the house made in concrete, but in United state, call it back garden where there's no grass but too got concrete. bonnet in english and hood in USA on the car example .

As we don't speak Portuguese, we have no strong opinion about this.
If it is possible to have only one translation by choosing neutral words, I think it would be better as it would minimize the translation effort by enabling more people to contribute to only one translation (and keeping things simple).
But if you think that it should be split, we can make it so.

For information, I took a look at recent statistics and for now there is three to five times as many users from Brazil as there is from Portugal.
There is a risk if we split that one of the translation won't be maintained.

I'm a recent user and I happen to be a professional translator-subtitler.

I've just submitted some EU-PT translations and I was wondering if, after all this time, you'll ponder again about having both EU-PT and BR-PT translations available, so the Portuguese users can be sure their translations are worth being made currently and in the future.

If the option is there, even if EU-PT translation is behind, one could always choose the BR-PT option while the EU-PT translation is being developed.

I've spotted several incorrect, literal, unidiomatic or machine translations on both EU-PT and BR-PT, so I thought it would be nice to improve the quality of the translations for both Portuguese and Brazilian users. I'm available to help and contribute to achieve that goal.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this.

Some of the contexts in both languages are worst. The words are common, but the sense isn't ever.
Vote for being separated choices.

Hey all! I'm a Portuguese from Portugal, and wanted to contribute to this conversation as well.

Personally, I would also vote for splitting the PT-BR and PT-EU translations. While the languages are close enough that both of them can be easily understood between themselves, I still feel the differences are significant enough that, even though I'll understand all PT-BR terms, it doesn't really read organically natural to me. I feel it goes much further than an American/British English difference, and even those are occasionally split as well.

The fact that PT-BR represents a larger group than PT-EU will always be true. I can empathize with the valid concern when it comes to creating a separate language which has the potential for being applicable to such a smaller set of people, that it might land on maintainability hell. However, I still think there's little to lose with the split. If it ends up being poorly-maintained, we'll just swap to PT-BR as we tend to do on all other websites with no (or poor) PT-EU translations.

The current setup also puts translators in an awkward situation where we wonder whether to submit a PT-EU or PT-BR translation, and which one to validate. It runs the risk of being a mix of both, whereas the split makes it clearer which type of translation to go for.

BGA has grown a lot through the years, and just anecdotally I know plenty of PT-EU people use the website as well. I think it would improve BGA's presence to put in an effort to make them feel more included. I'd very happily contribute to the translations as well.

Unfortunately, as a Brazilian, I end up opting to use English, because Portuguese from Portugal sounds like everything is written incorrectly.

It's sad to pay for a service and not receive support for your own language, especially when we are the ones translating collaboratively.

I wonder how the translation mafia handles France French vs Quebec Quebecois on the site? Is there enough user base in each region to support both?
