Real Time game just switch to Turn-Based because my side showed a turn taken that was not actually taken??

Post by nuffbought »

I joined a Real Time game and we had both played several turns, then my opponent's time ran out so I waited to see if they would come back. After waiting about 1:30 the game just switched to Turn-Based all of a sudden.

What happened and why? I didn't have any choice in the matter.

UPDATE:
The other player said he did it because he was waiting for me to take my turn. So he thought he was waiting and was able to switch it to Turn-Based without my accepting it?

Okay, so it seems the game thought it was my turn because on the side panel it shows I rolled, then the game switched, then I made my move. But that is NOT what happened on my end! I completed my turn, confirmed, then it showed the hourglass for my opponent and counted down his time and after it was showing -1:30 the game changed to Turn-Based.

I get that there could be a bug where the game is behind where it actually is and you need to refresh, but it seems that this time the game on my side was AHEAD of where it was on the server which seems impossible to me.

The timers on your screen keep running even when you lose connection to the server.

What happened here is, your game, or your screen wasn't updating.
And because your game screen didn't get notified the opponent had ended their turn. Their timer kept running and went negative.

But in reality, you were the one running out of time. Your opponent waited, and was kind enough to switch to turn based instead of expelling you. And since your time was negative, you automatically answer yes to a request to switch to turn based.

Yeah, my post is confusing because I found out new info after chatting with my opponent and realizing he did a very nice thing by switching since he thought, and was correct, that I was the one out of time.

But on my end I submitted my turn and it was his turn. But after looking at the side panel, he switched to turn-based after I got the roll, but before I made an action - according to the server, NOT according to what was on my screen.

So now the real issue is, how does it show the update on my screen that I finished my turn when on his screen I had not? So it's not the case that he took a turn that was not showing on my screen, it's that my screen showed that I had finished and submitted my turn even though the server then didn't 'think' I had taken my turn.

As you know, Backgammon allows to undo moves. Thus you can finish your move, redo it, finish in a different way, and then send it to the server.

In this case, you finished the move (and saw it on your side) and thought you did send it to the server. But your move never reached the server. You remained in a state as if you did your move and never hit the "Send" button. But since you in fact did hit the send button, your client reacted by counting down your opponents time. The server never realized that you hit "Send", only your client did.

That can't be it though, because my screen advanced to where it was the other person's turn, indicating that I did submit the move and it was accepted/registered as far as what I saw on my screen.

So how does it show that my turn was submitted and accepted and the time was counting down on my opponent, yet not show that that had happened on my opponent's screen. And his status was correct.

Either your client switched to your opponent even though the server had not received anything, or your opponent made a move that your client never received.
