I'm guessing it's a copyright issue, but even if it was, there should've been an official announcement letting us know.

But you've got no chance of an acknowledgement from BGA that they've stopped inserting him into the images, if only becase (as far as I know, anyway), they never actually acknowledged this as a feature

Let's say that the offices of BGA got a cease and desist letter from the rights holder of The Simpson's IP. One way this can be resolved is that the party accused of infringing the IP (in this case, BGA) settles the dispute by saying "I'll stop doing this, but I do not admit that it is wrong. I just don't want to fight." Except those two sentences are a five-page legal document.

Or this did not even need to come from the rights holder. It could have been the internal risk management department of Asmodee that said "hey, we don't want this to be an issue in the future. It's hard for us to say we respect all IP [which is what someone receiving a cease and desist letter typically says as part of their response] if this behavior is in our portfolio."
