Important changes to Heat with Tunnel Vision update

Post by RazorOz »

You will notice a few new options and changes with the release of Tunnel Vision.

Mulligan

There is now an option in game setup to turn mulligans on/off. After you draw your hand at the start of the game you will have the option to pay a heat and mulligan your starting hand, your hand will be reshuffled into your deck and you will draw a fresh 7 cards to start the game. You may only mulligan once per race.

Undo

There is now an undo button to undo certain actions. You can only undo actions that haven't revealed information.

Weather and Road Condition Tokens

You will notice some changes with the display of weather and road condition tokens. Corner modifiers are now applied to the corner speed limit that you will see on the screen, with the modifier token shown next to them. If you hover over a sector road condition token it will now highlight the sector that the token applies to.

React Step

The entire React step was rewritten for Tunnel Vision. You will notice that symbols on upgrades can now be directly activated off of the cards as well as the top display. This has some practical uses, for example if you have multiple Draft upgrades, the display will only display the total value of Draft that you have, if you wish to Draft twice or more in the same turn, you will need to activate each separate instance of Draft directly off of the cards in your play area. The same principle will apply to other mechanics such as scrap and super cool. This was done in order to ease the implementation of Draft, and to fix some bugs that existed prior, for example you can no longer scrap cards 1 by 1 as you could before, you can only scrap the total scrap value that you have from all upgrades or the individual values of each instance of scrap that you have for the turn.

Gas Pedal 4

Relating to the changes to the React step, the upgrade Gas Pedal 4 has undergone some changes. You can no longer Direct Play the card in the React step if you have 0 heat. The exception is if you have a heat in hand, you will be able to Direct Play the Gas Pedal 4 in the React step, but you must use the card's cooldown to pay its heat cost. If you play the card in step 2 with your regular cards for the turn while having 0 heat in engine the card will mimic the + action as per the normal rules for playing a card with a heat cost that you are unable to pay for.

Bug Fixes

Some other key bugs have been fixed in this update including:

Adrenaline surrounding situations where a player has left the game, including for the Championship event card which specifies if you spin out you are out of the race, should be fixed. The number of places given adrenaline for the turn will be based off the number of cars to start the race, not that are currently in the race.

The bug where the draft at the beginning of the game is unable to be completed after a player leaves the game should now be fixed.

The undo feature is quite nice. One issue with it is that there is no warning when an action will reveal information that prevents an undo. This is typically how other games with an undo feature avoid issues where you take an action to explore the outcome with an intent to undo, only to find out you can't. This is particularly noteworthy because boosting previously gave a heat change warning, allowing you to cancel the action after reviewing the change in heat cost from the action at a corner. It appears that this no longer happens, so clicking the boost button with the expectation of a warning and option to cancel the action before flipping a card instead locks you into an undoable action. I think clicking boost should A) still show the heat change warning for a corner where applicable and B) warn the player that this step cannot be undone because it reveals information.

Weather modifying limits displaying the new limit instead of punishing players for forgetting to do the maths is a HUGE WIN. Thank you for this change! I am sure all Heat fans worldwide who are playing on BGA will love this change.

Interesting, I think my only experience of a game with potential hidden information with undo is Lost Ruins of Arnak, and that never warns you about taking an action that will reveal information that you can't undo.

I think the heat warning should still be there, and you should probably report it as a bug. Warnings aren't my strong point, as I don't tend to notice them too much, so am often oblivious if they've been removed from how they were before, so others will have to report on this.

This, it feels like some essential warning functionalities for lost in the mix here.

The notification have not been changed. If you boost around a corner you still get a warning, with the potential heat you need to pay.
If you boost on a straight (with no potential clearing a corner) there has never been a warning that this cost a heat, as this is just the normal rules you pay heat for a boost.
All is still the same as it was.

I do feel like some warnings are gone now. I could be wrong but I think before this change if I used adrenaline to go around a curve it would warn me if it was going to cost heat (and how me how much heat and how much I had left in my engine). Now it does not. It will show how much heat I owe after the fact and let me undo if I don't want to. But I miss that warning.

Just to emphasise, as a lot of people are filing bug reports on Adrenaline now.

Adrenaline is based off the number of cars to start the race, not currently in the race. I have had it confirmed by the designers directly that this applies to all scenarios, including players leaving the race mid-race and the Championship event which states if a player spins out, they're out of the race.

Adrenaline was changed in this update to reflect this. When considering if you should be getting adrenaline, please make sure you are considering all cars that started the race.
