elo and arena

Post by FiloDePicis »

Hello everybody!

Sorry for the question but are the elo and the matchup in the arena linked?

I'm quite good, not that op, but still over 500 elo and i keep finding opponents under 200 elo in this season arena matches.
At the beginning i tought it was a metter of league (i didnt play much the previous season and i started in gold) but now that i'm in the elite league it keeps happening.
I wonder if it's just random probability or if there's a connection between elo and matchups.
The other question is: how can so many low elo people be in the elite league? Or u just find random opponents besides elo AND arena's league?
if that's the case isn't it a bit pointless the league's system?

i'm just curious, don't know if u can't help me with this dilemma. :)

For starters, make sure you use https://boardgamearena.com/lobby and click the cogwheel to set that you only want to meet people at the same level (arena tier) as you. This filters only by Arena tier and not by Elo, which you cannot use in Arena games. You need to queue from the lobby page in order for the filters set to be active.

That said, yes, you can still meet 100-200 Elo opponents at "Elite" Arena. BGA, in their infinite wisdom, has made an arena league system where you cannot be demoted from a league, so anyone who reaches Elite will stay in Elite even if they lose 90% of their games.

Yes, it's extremely bad. Some people use the thumbs down script to alleviate it somewhat, but it's not perfect and a bit cumbersome to set up.

The dumbest part is that when you make simple games you actually can filter by Elo and limit a table to certain Elo levels, but not for Arena. The competitive version of the game has worse matchmaking than the "casual" gamemode.

Elo isnt taken into account during match making.
You can set a preference for only wanting to play vs people in the same league.

Sorryimlikethis made a forum post about this setting since its not easy to find.

Later in the season more and more lower Elo players will reach Elite tho.

I know there is some software going around with which you can red thumb low elo players.
I don't agree with the use of that software tho and not sure if it is against BGA policy to use it.

EDIT to reply to Rambling.
It kinda makes sense to give players less control over their opponents when it comes to league play. In most competitions you can't freely pick your opponents.

Sure, in most competitive modes, you are not able to freely choose your opponents, but you tend to know that they are within a certain range of your skill level. BGA's Arena system allow people who are ~100 Elo to reach Elite tier and be matched with players at ~7-800 Elo. And neither player can do anything to prevent it.

It is a complete joke and is absolutely fair to criticise.

If they want to make arena tiers the only determining factor, then they should allow league demotion. If they are not going to do that, then they should have actual matchmaking which takes in to account either a) Arena rating or b) Elo when matching players.

The reasoning is that elo takes into account all game variants, and all history, while Arena ranking is only for this season (both timeframe and game settings). It's assumed that two elite players have a "similar" strength in the current season. It's obviously wrong, but that's why elo is not taken into account (I guess).

It's also to entertain, some low elo player set a rank as goal and try to achieve it before the end of the season. Their elo will stay stable but their rank will move forward which is a gratification in itself.

Now, if you play a week after the beginning of the season, the high elo have moved for the most part so it's kinda easier to have a fair match. The more you wait, the more the average elo in elite decrease. Until the next reset.

The addition of new leagues (platinum, diamond) was a nice way to have a better matchmaking.

That did next-to-nothing to fix the actual issue. A lower skill player who plays a lot will still end up in Elite, it just may take them another few days.

Well in turn based game, it slowed it quite a lot.

Hello everyone,
Could someone explain how the Arena point system works across the different leagues?
For example, I’m currently in the Diamond league. When I win against a player with a significantly lower ELO than mine (often from a lower league), I sometimes gain only +1 point. On the other hand, if I lose against a player who has a much higher ELO than me, I can lose 4 points.
What exactly determines how many points are gained or lost after a match?
Is it purely based on ELO difference, league difference, or something else?
Thanks in advance for your explanations!

If you are not in the Elite league, you gain/lose 3 points against an opponent in the same league as you. Gain is increased and loss is reduced by 1 for each league you are below your opponent. And it's the opposite if you are in leagues above your opponent : gain is reduced by 1 while loss is increased by 1 for each difference in league levels
