Thumbs down

Post by flosupertramp »

Hello

I just finished a game of Catan. My two opponents were extremely slow and both exceeded the time limit. I was in last place for a long time and never tried to expel anyone. Eventually, I took the lead. I was one move away from winning when another player took advantage of the situation to expel the third-place player. So, I waited more time in this game and spent an hour playing for nothing. I reported the player with a thumbs down, but none of the suggested reasons seem convincing. I think you should add an option like "expels another player to avoid losing a game." This is absolutely unfair and unsportsmanlike!

Well, you chose to continue the game knowing (as you should have known) that any player could terminate the game at any point.

Blame the player(s) who were out of time, not the one who expelled.

So you should just expel right away to prevent anybody else from doing it later?!

This is absolutely shoddy behaviour from the person who expelled at that moment. Yes, you can blame the other person too but they were not the one who threw over the table to prevent a loss. Let's not forget that bit here.

The reason you specify for the red thumb is irrelevant since the red thumbs do nothing except make you not play with that person again. You can write a comment to yourself on their profile page though.

100% of the time you should expel. If you are playing competitive chess you lose when you run out of time, if you play in a real life tournament and go over on time you lose, it should be no different when playing competitive games on BGA.

I find the 20 sec warning timer that is optional as something that should be removed. I don’t think you should lose reputation when this happens but you should automatically lose if you run out of time. It’s just not fair to the other players who plan ahead and can make moves in the allotted time. If you don’t want timers don’t play competitive.

Most players still want to track their Elo scores but don't see a need to rush through a game. They just want some fun playing without a bunch of stress. I see the timer as a reminder that I should play according to a certain speed and I try to stick to it and would like that from others but if it so happens that a turn takes longer or you have something else on your mind then that's that.

Being deprived of the rest of the game is frustrating. That's why I redthumb most people who expel others in games with me. It's not about getting a win (because they just gave me a shared win), it's about the disappointment of not seeing that game to the end. Luckily, not many people expel in turn-based mode.

I know some people are just going to continue throwing out others as soon as they can or at very opportune moments like in this game. I just don't want people who write on the forum indoctrinated with this mindset that that is what you SHOULD do. Playing here should be about fun, not about winning at any cost.

You are saying most players, but I don't know how you would know that?

Most people playing competitive are playing to test their skills, a part of testing their skills is also taking turns in a timely manner. If you don't want people to get kicked from a game you can play non competitive versions of the game and or play async. There are several ways for you to avoid the timer penalty, there is only one mode where the timer penalty is enforced. If you decide that you are not going to enforce it on your turn that's on you, but you really shouldn't be mad at those who do, and not surprised if you get kicked for taking long turns. Once again you are choosing to play in that mode, no one is making you do that.

You shouldn't go to a pizza place and get mad at other people for ordering pizza when you wanted a hamburger.

For me and a lot of people in the space it gets very annoying when someone is taking long turns back to back and running out the timer, it's fine in a casual game should not be in a competitive game.

I'm talking about the case of a player who himself exceeded the time limit but ended up expelling another player to prevent me from winning... I was one move away from winning. The person wouldn't have acted that way if they themselves had been winning the game.

You may have been "one move away from winning", but they were also one move away from not losing, and they made that move.

If it is competitive play, you should be playing to win. Part of playing to win is using that timer. You would be much less frustrated had you expelled and gotten to play another game that went to conclusion.

I don't think it's right that a player tolerates others exceeding the time limit when he wins but doesn't tolerate it when he loses. It's clearly not fair play, sorry.
