What do you mean with 3 numbers in a row? Advancing on 6-7-8 gives the best possible combination to advance far. Advancing on 4-5-6 is risky, however, and for obvious reasons even more so if you try 2-3-4...

I just mean like having 6-7-8 is mathematically the best. However in my experience having something like 5-7-9 is better.

5-7-9 is one of the worst combinations in the middle. Whenever I have those numbers or my opponent has them I already know that one cannot go far. See the statistics above... 5-7-10 is much better than 5-7-9!

Personally I love the combinations 4-6-8 or 6-8-10 because they have a probability almost as good as 6-7-8 and one can safely advance on 4 or 10, respectively.

Also 6-7-9, 6-7-10, even 6-7-12 are very good combinations where on can really play very boldly...

It should be obvious that having all odd-numbered columns is a bad choice compared to having at least one even-numbered column.

After all, having all odd-numbered columns requires at least one but no more than three odd numbers to be rolled, and for an odd number to be combined with the right even number to equal your column number.

That means that when you have all odd columns, 1/8 of the rolls (rolling all evens (1/16) + rolling all odds (1/16) = 1/8) will automatically end your turn, plus the rolls where the even and odd dice do not add up in your favor.

But since the even numbers (other than 2 or 12) can come from either adding two evens or adding two odds, you are guaranteed that an even number comes up in every single roll of the dice, and it's just a matter of whether it's the right one or not.
